Thankyou for choosing Norton Street Dental for your following treatment.

Post – Op care following an Extraction.

What happens now?

Please follow the following instructions:

1. Please continue to bite down and apply pressure on the gauze for 45mins to an hour following an extraction. Bleeding after an extraction can last for a few hours.

2. Please avoid any vigorous rinsing or spitting for up to 48hours following an extraction, which may dislodge the blood clot.

3. Please avoid eating or drinking until the numbness of the local anaesthetic has subsided. Which can be anywhere up to 2 – 4hours, depending on the individual.

4. When eating please have soft foods and avoid the extraction site up to 48hours following the extraction, as any activity can interfere with the healing process.

5. It is important to continue with oral hygiene and keep the extraction site clean. Please continue to brush and floss your teeth as normal as possible, but be gentle and avoid any aggressive brushing or flossing around the extraction site which can traumatize any new tissue that has formed.

6. After 24hours following an extraction, gargle and do some gentle rinses several times a day, with warm salt water – this acts as a natural sterilization, and helps reduce swelling and relieve pain.

7. It is extremely important to avoid any alcohol and smoking for 48hours after an extraction as this can dehydrate the site and significantly delay the healing process and cause a “Dry Socket”

8. Please be aware that the extraction site may be sore and tender up to 2 weeks after an extraction. If pain persists or becomes worse over time please contact us immediately and arrange a follow up appointment.

9. Please avoid taking any pain relief medications which contain Ibuprofen such a Nurofen directly after an extraction, as Ibuprofen acts as a blood thinner and may disrupt with the development of blood clot. Panadol is a great alternative to have right after the extraction if needed.

10. Please follow up with our Dentist within the following 24 – 48hrs to note how you are doing after the procedure.
