JOEL WHITBURN

About the Author: From an eager record-collecting teenager in the 1950s to a world-renowned musicologist in the 21st century, Joel Whitburn's passion for music and the Billboard charts is ongoing. Joel turned his chart-watching hobby into a business in 1970 with the publication of his first book. Over the past 40 years, Joel's company, Record Research, has published over 200 reference books, which chronicle over a century of American music. These, as well as Joel's books published by Billboard Books, are required reading for virtually anyone with a serious interest in music. He has also collaborated with Rhino Records on a series of over 150 CD compilations of America's top charted hits. Joel's own comprehensive charted music collection is the backbone of his research. Ever the hobbyist, Joel participates in a wide variety of water, winter and motor sports, but the active, six-and-a-half footer ranks basketball and softball as his top sports. The Wisconsinite and his wife Fran, a native of Honduras, enjoy spending time in southern Florida and central Wisconsin with their daughter Kim Bloxdorf, her husband Dave, and their children Samantha and Nathaniel.

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS EDITION

In a continuing effort to improve each subsequent edition of Hot R&B Songs, some new features were added to this sixth edition.

NEW ARTIST RANKING METHODOLOGY

Due to the large number of "Featured" artists appearing on today's recordings, our ranking method gives less points to an artist when shown as a "Featured" artist than as the lead artist. An artist receives 20% of the points for his "Featured" titles. For example, for the title "Get Up" by Ciara Featuring Chamillionaire, Ciara receives 100% of the points assigned to this title as she is the lead artist, while Chamillioniare receives only 20% of the points as he is the "featured" artist.

RE-ENTRIES

If a title was off the chart for more than 12 weeks and peaked in a different year, it is now considered a re-entry. All re-entries now appear immediately below the original chart entry for easy reference.

DUET TITLES

All duos, featured names and song titles by multiple artists are shown as they are listed on the record labels and sleeves. All regular duets, such as Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, are now grouped below the solo titles at the end of the artist listing.

DIGITAL DOWNLOADS

In keeping up with the ever-changing musical landscape, a new special symbol marks all digital download-only hits.

On December 5, 1992, Billboard dramatically revised the compilation methodology of the Hot R&B Singles chart and thus improved the chart's accuracy. Since then, Billboard has compiled the chart from a combination of input from radio stations continuously monitored by Broadcast Data Systems (see "Chart Methodologies" on page 10), additional playlists from small-market stations, and actual point-of-sale information provided by SoundScan, Inc.
