|Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits | | | |
|discrimination of an individual with a disability. Disability is | | | |
|defined as a “physical or mental impairment that substantially limits| | | |
|one or more of major life activities.” An amendment was passed in | | | |
|2008 broadening the definition of major life activities. Included in| | | |
|the amendment is abnormal functioning of the endocrine system, thus | | | |
|diabetes can be considered a disability and any facility receiving | | | |
|federal funding or open to the public must reasonably accommodate the| | | |
|needs of people with diabetes. A formal determination process | | | |
|should be completed using many sources of information to determine a | | | |
|student’s eligibility including a medical diagnosis. | | | |
