Class Policies & Procedures

Biology is a high school credit course. Biology students must take and pass an end of course exam (EOC) in order to get credit for this course. All students must maintain a minimum grade of 80%; students not meeting these expectations will be removed from the course. Expect about 3-4 hours of homework per week for this class.
Supplies – students should bring the following to class each day
1. Three ring binder (1.5” or larger, inside pocket)
2. Loose leaf paper
3. Graph paper
4. Spiral notebook – this is referred to as the INB
5. Pencil bag that contains the following supplies:
6. Pencils and small pencil sharpener
7. Blue or Black Pen
8. Red checking pen
9. Colored pencils
10. Glue stick
11. Scissors
12. Highlighter
Students should also bring and leave the following items in the classroom
1. 1 roll of paper towels
2. 1 package of disposable gloves
3. 1 bottle of liquid hand soap
4. 1 box Kleenex
Binder and notebook – kept in date order (you do not need dividers)
• Binder contains all handouts, and any work not done in spiral notebook (INB)
• Notes and other written information, along with reflections will be kept in the spiral notebook (INB)
Assignments
• Homework assignments should be recorded daily.
• Notes, labs and daily work should be completed in class
• Quizzes and quizzes over homework assignments will be administered
• Tests and major projects – will be on the agenda at least a week in advance
• Science Fair Projects will be due before the end of the first semester
• A research project will be due at the end of the second semester
Textbook – the new textbook is completely digital, no hardcopies.
Grading:
Class work – 20%
Quizzes – 30%
Homework Grades – 10%
Test/Project/Lab Grades – 40%
Final and Mid-term - 25% of final grade
Make-up Work/Late Work:
Absent:
• Get makeup work as soon as you return
• Due according to HISD policy
• It is the student’s responsibility to turn in work labeled with name, assignment name, date of absence, date turned in. Put this work in the late box.
Late:
• Full credit – work must be turned in at the beginning of the period on the due date. Must have a name to get credit. Homework cannot be turned in late unless the student has been absent.
• Partial credit - for class work turned in late. Late work must be turned into the late box, with the student’s name, date turned in and period number written on it. 10% off for each day it is late. No credit – class work turned in later than 3 days after originally due.
Retakes:
• You may retake a test that was below a 70
• Must come in during tutorials to retake/redo the work
• Dates for test retakes will be announced
Tardy
o Students should be in their seat when the bell rings to avoid receiving a tardy consequence.
Bathroom Passes:
• A limited number of bathroom passes (six per semester) will be given for emergency restroom breaks, students should make every attempt to take care of their bathroom needs between classes.
Tutoring:
• Available Monday - Thursday after school
• Get help as soon as possible so you stay current with the class
• Come to tutorials with questions
• Assignment retakes and makeup tests should be done in tutorials

Lab Safety All laboratory safety rules will be strictly enforced. Students may be removed from the lab activity if they do not follow safety rules.
