OkCOMS was a new, freestanding, public osteopathic medical school. I gave the first lecture at the College and continued to 1) Receive outstanding teacher award at end of my first year of teaching, 2) Organize and manage the first office of Student Affairs and 3) Organize and manage first Office of Research.

President 1981 - 1987

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) • Lewisburg, West Virginia

In 1981 WVSOM was a public osteopathic medical school at a time when osteopathic medicine was considered to be “alternative medicine” and the State lacked the resources to sustain it. My accomplishments included 1) Persuading the governor and state legislature to increase funding, 2) Securing alliances with surrounding Appalachian states to train rural primary care physicians in exchange for professional education in other fields, 3) Establishing the first osteopathic internships in allopathic hospitals, 4) Helping to bring osteopathic medicine into the mainstream of higher education and healthcare.

President and Professor of Pharmacology 1987 -1991

Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine • Tulsa, Oklahoma

This is the same public osteopathic medical school at which I began my career in1974. My accomplishments included: 1) Merging OkCOMS with Oklahoma State University, 2) Acquiring additional property for campus expansion, 3) Constructing new and extensively renovating existing facilities, 4) Pioneering rural health initiatives through the OSU Agricultural Extension Centers. These accomplishments are regarded as critical steps that mainstreamed osteopathic medical education and allowed formation of Oklahoma State University – Tulsa and the Oklahoma State University Academic Medical Center.

President (Interim) 1991 - 1992

Kansas City University of Medicine and Biology (KCUMB) • Kansas City, Missouri

While “on loan” from the Oklahoma State University and A&M Board of Regents, I was responsible for stabilizing this osteopathic medical school following the death of its previous President. Other accomplishments included 1) the sale of a university owned hospital 2) development of a campus master plan that has since been implemented and 3) the acquisition of a permanent president.

President (Interim) 1992-1993

Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO A&M) • Miami, Oklahoma

NEO A&M College is a two-year residential community college governed by the Oklahoma State University and A&M Board of Regents. Accomplishments included 1) stabilization the College and its relationship with the community following the dismissal of the previous president 2) construction of a new equestrian arena 3) comprehensive renovation of several dormitories and 4) liquidation of some noncontiguous and highly politicized property.

University of Oklahoma College of Medicine - Tulsa (OUCM-T) • Tulsa, Oklahoma

Responsibilities included the strategic planning and legislative affairs that led to the acquisition of a new campus and the formation of the University of Oklahoma – Tulsa and the development of the research organization and professional practice plan necessary to advance the mission of this research university in Tulsa.

National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) • Portland, Oregon

NUNM is the “mother ship” for natural medicine in North America and provided my “inaugural voyage” in complementary medicine. Notable accomplishments included 1) securing a new basic science campus 2) securing two new clinical campuses, 3) accreditation for a new program in oriental medicine, 4) candidacy for regional accreditation, 5) establishment of a research program that participated in the formation of three national centers of excellence with surrounding health science education institutions, 6) first naturopathic residency in an allopathic hospital, 7) establishment of the American Association of Colleges of Naturopathic Medicine and 8) stabilizing a challenged naturopathic medical college in Arizona.

By the year 2000 I had led and taught throughout the continuum of higher education institutions and healthcare professions and was often invited to assist with critical transitions and transformations. In 2001 I formed Continuum Biomedical Consultants, Inc. as an S corporation to facilitate health sciences education and biomedical research collaboration among higher education and industry clients. During this time I elucidated my concepts of the healthcare continuum and cleft and presented to audiences in the United States and Europe. Some of the following roles were performed as an employee of Continuum Biomedical Consultants rather than the institutions listed.

I accepted this consulting contract to apply my domestic higher education executive experience to a foreign medical school. My accomplishments included the development of student-centered strategic plan, the formation of a governing board to serve as a “fire wall” between the for profit corporation that owned the medical school and the altruistic medical school and the survival of the School during the loss temporary loss of student financial aid.

I accepted this full-time administrative position to examine the ability of entry-level professions to collaborate. While at MHCC I managed a 120 faculty member academic division that included such disciplines as astronomy, anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, physics, geology, fisheries technology, natural resources technology, sustainability, health and safety, civil, electrical, architectural and environmental engineering and mathematics. I also developed, delivered and published “Health Professions Continuum” courses and outcomes demonstrating the potential role of entry-level health care professions in bridging the “continuum cleft.”
