Tie these circumstances to some of the historical issues we discussed in class during the first week (e.g., conceptualizations of disability, development of systematic services for persons with disabilities) and to any other factors that might have impacted the decision to place this person in an institutional setting (e.g., economic, social, etc).

Find the definition of intellectual disability that was used at the time the person entered the institution (Look in Chapter 2 of your textbook to find the early definitions used.) Using the information provided by Edgerton’s description and the definition criteria provided in Chapter 2, do you think this person met the criteria for that definition? Why or why not? Use the current definition criteria (the 2002 definition) and explain whether or not that person would meet the definition used today.
