Exam 3 Study Guide

The third test will cover Chapters 11, 13, 14(pp 378-390), 15 ( pp413-431), and 16 in the Schaefer text and all lecture material since the second test. If you have read the material carefully, know the “key concepts”, and attended the lectures, you should be very well prepared.

The questions below should help guide your study. They are a help, but certainly not all you need to know. I will not burden you with having to memorize specific statistical percentages, etc, but you should be able to discuss patterns and comparisons between groups, trends in the birthrate, etc).

Chapter 11-Gender and Age Stratification

Distinguish between sex and gender. What are some of the ways we learn gender roles and appropriate behavior? Discuss some of the consequences of gender stratification for women in American society. Are we a gender equal society? What are some basic ideas and types of feminism?

What is ageism? How do functionalism, conflict theory, and interactionist theory view age stratification?

Chapter 12- Family

How does the actual family structure in the US today differ from the cultural ideal? Be able to describe various forms of marriage and family on a global basis. How do functional and conflict theorists view the family? What are four basic forms of marriage? Be able to describe some of the changes in family life cycle patterns in the last 50 years.

Chapter 14-Politics and the Economy

Economy: What are the various types of economic systems in the world? What makes a good job? Who comprises the labor force?

Politics: How do sociologists define power? Compare the various theories of power in our society in terms of who rules America.

Chapter 15 pp. 368-375 Population and pp. 382-96Communities/Urbanization

Define demography and its three component parts. How does each impact population change? Be able to discuss the theory of the demographic transition and Malthus’ theory. Be able to describe the patterns of growth in cities in Europe and the US based on technology—pre-industrial to industrial to post-industrial city. What is urban ecology and how do the three models differ? What are some issues facing cities today?

Chapter 16 Social Change

What are several social factors which lead to social change? What is a social movement? What is the role of technology in social change? How do the various approaches to sociology view social change?
