Colonial Real Estate Agency Project

You are a real estate agent in 18th century colonial America. In order to attract more settlers to your region of the colonies, you must create an advertising “sales pitch” to persuade your European audience to migrate. (It can be a detailed brochure, infomercial, PowerPoint, etc.) Be aware that the audience can ask questions and make comments, so be prepared! You will have a maximum of 8 minutes to present.

The class will be broken into groups and will be assigned either the Southern, Middle, or New England colonies. One group will be assigned the task of trying to encourage Europeans to stay at home by pointing out the negative aspects of the 3 colonial regions.

You will be graded in 3 categories:

50 points = Information - Do you have detailed facts?

• Government

• Religion

• Land Ownership

• Ethnic Diversity

• Employment and Upward Mobility

• Safety (Indians, Health)

• Entertainment

• Education

• Environment

• Interesting Historical Events

20 points = Presentation, Creativity, and Persuasiveness - Do you have an interesting and creative advertising campaign? Do you present the information in a persuasive way that would cause Europeans to migrate? Do you present in a professional manner?

5 points = Bibliography - A Chicago bibliography is required. At least 4 sources must be used. At least one resource must be non-Internet. Your project will not be scored unless accompanied by a bibliography.

**If the project is something acted out with a script, the script must be TYPED and submitted on the day of the presentations.**

This project will be due on ________________________________.

It will count as a 75 POINT QUIZ GRADE.

I know many of you assign a version of the "Rate the Colony" project that has been shared at numerous AP conferences over the years.  The premise is this:  Groups of students make a presentation highlighting the strengths of their colonial region (New England, Middle, and Southern) circa 1750 with the idea of recruiting European immigrants (role played by other students) to make a new life in their region. The immigrants ask questions, there is a one day conference with food and drink where the colonial representatives make their pitch to the immigrants, and this all culminates with the immigrants writing papers ranking the colonial regions and explaining their decisions.  The students really get into it with costumes, accents, and character development.

I wish to share with you one of the better media presentations that I have seen in all the years I have been assigning this project.  It is the media portion of the Southern Colonies presentation.  They followed up with verbal descriptions of their region (with some playful negative comments about the other two regions) and also handled questions.  But the point is they GOT the purpose of the assignment.  They properly contrasted their region with the others, emphasizing anything negative that they could bring to bear on New England and Middle colonies, while at the same time conveniently overlooking some of their own weaknesses.  Only true research could reveal the difference.
