State Standards/Learning Objectives: S6-C2, C3: Earth and Space Science
Earth and Space Science provides the foundation for students to develop an understanding of the Earth, its history, composition, and formative processes, and an understanding of the solar system and the universe. Students study the regularities of the interrelated systems of the natural world. In doing so, they develop understandings of the basic laws, theories, and models that explain the world (NSES, 1995). By studying the Earth from both a historical and current time frame, students can make informed decisions about issues affecting the planet on which they live.
Research Project
Directions: Students are to research one of the following topics, make a power point presentation that demonstrates their understanding of the topic, and present the power point to the class. Topics to be researched MUST be approved by the teacher and an approval form is to be submitted.
Topics are as follows:
❖ How the Moon’s appearance changes during a four-week lunar cycle.
❖ Describe the Moon and Planet’s change in position and real motion over time.
❖ Describe the Sun, Moon and Stars’ change in position and apparent motion over time (due to the motion of the Earth).
❖ How Earth’s rotation results in day and night at any particular location.
❖ How revolution and rotation affects the planets.
❖ The role of gravity as an attractive force between celestial objects.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Mars.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Venus.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Earth.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Mercury.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Jupiter.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Saturn.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Uranus.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Neptune.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Pluto.
❖ The distinguishing characteristics and interesting facts about Planet X.
❖ Current Issues: Is Pluto really a planet?
❖ Asteroids
❖ Comets
❖ Stars/Constellations
❖ Meteors
❖ Shooting Stars
❖ Describe efforts to explore space - Apollo Missions
❖ Describe efforts to explore space - Space Shuttle
❖ Describe efforts to explore space - Hubble Space Telescope
❖ Describe efforts to explore space – Lowell’s Observatory
Project Requirements (Group of 1 or 2 students)
In order to get full credit, your Power Point MUST include the following:
1. A total of 10 slide minimum
2. A “title slide with photograph” introducing your slide show
3. A minimum of 10 facts about your topic
4. A minimum of 10 pictures
5. One slide dedicated to explaining how your chosen topic affects the Earth (can be negatively or positively).
6. One slide dedicated to sharing something you found to be amazing/most interesting about your topic that you want to share with your classmates.
7. Projects are to be presented to the class. A project grade and a presentation grade will be given.
Students will be graded on the power point using the following rubric:
