Biotechnology websites that are interesting, informative, or … maybe not

Good all around website, one of my favorites:

a new really cool website- I don’t know much about it, but it is also put out by the Cold Spring Harbor folks

an online textbook on genetics- very cool

genetic science learning center- another website that offers lots of info about biotechnology, techniques used in the lab, genetic counseling and genetics in general- written so high school aged folks can understand what they say

pbs website on a 4 part video series on DNA and its effects on society- how has DNA research influenced how we live and work?- I missed taping the first video, but have a copy of the last three segments. If you want to borrow the videotape, let me know. We might watch a segment or two in class, if we have time.

online Mendelian inheritance in man- a source of info for any genetic disease- can be complicated, but has good info

national website on biotechnology- has cutting edge info, human genome links, links to genbank (sequence databank), and lots more

tutorials for BLAST, Entrez, Pubmed, NCBI news, resource publications, map viewer exercises, structure tutorial, NCBI handbook- if you don’t use them in this class, you might in future classes in college

A science primer- info on bioinformatics, genome mapping, microarray technology, molecular genetics, pharmacogenomics, phylogenomics, and more

human genome resources

The dna files- a pbs publication

center for bioethics

pbs series about innovation

website about genetic counseling:

Department of energy human genome website- the Dept of energy is the gov’t agency that sponsored the research on the human genome

website of the joint genome institute- the folks sequencing the human genome; some of their physical locations are in the Bay Area

national human genome research institute- research, health, policy and ethics

and yet another website about the human genome project, but this one has an international bent

Utah genome depot

Howard Hughes medical institute- check out the section for young scientists. If I can get us to be able to view DVDs, we will hopefully see a lecture or two from their lecture series

a non-profit institute for genomic research

a directory of 400 biotech companies

a website focusing on careers in biotechnology, where to get training for such careers, and pretty much anything dealing with how to get a biotech job

an index of biological links on the internet- it is like a page that lets you find even more pages about biology things- very comprehensive

a website all about the brain- has lots of interesting articles

really cool videos on cells

forensic stuff that includes DNA forensics work- very cool, has links

a multimedia genetics tutorial
