J.Kittinger-Art SNOW DAY(S)

There are four assignments here. Please choose ONE to focus on. If done correctly it should take you 4 days to complete. Remember each snow day you should focus on this work for 1 hour 15 minutes-same as if you were in school.

1. DRAWING FROM OBSERVATION AND LIFE

What does it mean to draw from life?

It means you have to look at your physical surroundings and create a drawing from direct observation, no photographs, Google images, etc.

How will I get inspiration?

Look around your house for things that you’d like to draw some ideas might be:

A window

Scenery out the window

A pet

Your bedroom

A family member

A favorite pair of shoes

A hallway

A family heirloom

Furniture

Be creative. I expect to see time invested in your drawing.

2. RESEARCH A FAMOUS ARTIST

Choose an artist from this list, research the artist, look at their work, then discuss in a one page paper; what the artist is known for, what makes their work unique, when were they a practicing artist, and what you admire about their work…

Georgia O’Keeffe

Wassily Kandisky

Leonardo daVinci

3. IMPLEMENTING PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN IN OUR WORK

1. Research, list, and define the principles of design in visual arts.

2. On a separate piece of paper please create a drawing that mainly focuses on two principles of design. For example you could draw a face with balance and symmetry, and shade the face using contrast in value. I want to see detail in your work and it should look complete. Please describe on the back of the work which principles you used and how you used them. Discuss the process. Look up process in visual arts and what that means.

4. What is a still-life?

A still life is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects. Some examples include; rocks, shells, a vase of flowers, tablecloths, cups, bowls, kitchenware, shoes, jewelry, etc.

Example:

What is value?

Value is light and dark in an artwork.

Your assignment is to create a still life drawing with at least three objects. These objects will need to be commonplace objects. Look around your house for objects that you feel would be interesting to draw. Work from life, set the objects up in a place with nice lighting-where you can see shadows and contrast in value.

Carefully observe your objects, and then draw the objects beginning with the shape and outline of the objects. Once your line drawing is complete, you will shade the objects using a pencil. You must have a range in value. Dark-light

Watch a YouTube video of shading if you need some guidance.
