Drawing assignment “Repetition”

Students will learn.

• How to render foreground, mid-ground and background within a drawing

• How to draw from observation

• How to create an interesting composition within a charcoal / chalk drawing

• How to create, render and correctly use and apply charcoal, chalk and mixed media to a drawing

• How to exemplify artistic integrity within your artwork

• How to measure and create correct proportions within a drawing

Assignment

Artists through history have rendered from direct observation expressively, compositionally and technically. Although the drawing media may vary, the result of creating a drawing through direct observation is done every day. It is how one learns to observe and see the world artistically. You will render your “Repetition” drawing using charcoal and chalk.

Your Task:

As an artist observing objects, you will draw, and create a compositionally interesting; twelve, value repetitive drawing of two objects repeated within your composition four times each. You will use your previously learned drawing concepts, understanding of value, composition and your direct observational skills. This artwork will be no smaller then 18x12 inches in size, and you will have five class periods to complete it. You’re “Repetition” drawing will be done in charcoal/ chalk, will be fully realistic, compositionally acceptable, must include ten to twelve values, and portions of the artwork must be created from direct observation.
