Mr. Callaghan

Period 2: Organization and Reorganization of Human Societies, c. 600 B.C.E. to c. 600 C.E.

Planning and Teaching a Lesson

You and your group will plan and teach a lesson to your class from the following.

1. India 600 B.C.E – 600 C.E. (p. 42 – 63 & 241-247) (two groups decide on empires)

2. Qin and Han China 600 B.C.E (p. 77-94 & 154-157)(two groups decide on empires)

3. Greece 600 B.C.E – 600 C.E. (p. 100 – 125)

4. Rome 600 B.C.E – 600 C.E. (p. 126 – 1157) (two groups can split Rome up)

5. The Americas 600 B.C.E – 600 C.E. (p. 162- 170)

6. Early Africa 600 B.C.E – 600 C.E. (p. 216- 223)

Your lesson will consist of two parts:

• You will engage the class in an enrichment activity. The purpose of an enrichment activity is to reinforce and support the content learned from the reading. It is also an opportunity to compare and contrast the Empires and to look at continuity and change. This is your opportunity to be creative. Think of some of the interesting things you have done in your classes over the years. You can have the class make posters, write poems/songs, perform skits, play a game (not the best choice), or engage in class discussion (or small group). If you select an activity that will not take a lot of time, you can involve the class in two separate activities. This is your opportunity to keep the class interested and involved.

• Finally, you will assess the class on the material you presented. By this, I mean you will have them take a quiz on the material you have presented and enriched. The quiz questions should modeled after the AP World History Exam. You do not want to make your quiz too easy as you will not help the students prepare for the test. The quiz should be a minimum of 5 questions and a maximum of 10 questions long, multiple choice. You may use programs like quizlet.

• Your lesson will take 30-40 minutes of a class period, so plan your time wisely. You will want to ensure that you have enough information and activities to keep the class engaged for the full time. I would recommend planning out what you intend to do with a time frame.

• You will have 4-5 days in class to plan your lesson, locate additional resources, prepare any handouts, overheads, power points, etc. They will not always be full class periods given to work on this.

• Everyone in your group will receive the same grade. This will count as a major grade.
