IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR 2021
Exam Structure Update As of 2020, the Family Medicine Certification Examination no longer contains the 40 question, topicspecific module component. This decision was made in light of expected shifts in one-day examinee numbers, primarily due to the introduction of the Family Medicine Certification Longitudinal Assessment examination alternative option. Given the forecasted drop in one-day examinees in 2020 and beyond, we would no longer have a sufficient number of exam deliveries to allow for reliable scoring of all seven topicspecific modules. The examination is now composed entirely of breadth of Family Medicine questions and is structured as follows:
Exam Section 1 = 75 Multiple Choice Questions (95 Minutes)
Optional Break*
Exam Section 2 = 75 Multiple Choice Questions (95 Minutes)
Optional Break*
Exam Section 3 = 75 Multiple Choice Questions (95 Minutes)
Optional Break*
Exam Section 4 = 75 Multiple Choice Questions (95 Minutes)
*Note: 100 minutes of pooled break time will be available to use between exam sections.
One-Time Extension to Complete 2018-2020 Stage Requirements The deadline to complete the 2018-2020 three-year stage requirements was extended to December 31, 2021 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020. To honor this extension, completion of these requirements will not be necessary to be approved to sit for the one-day Family Medicine Certification Examination in 2021 as they normally would. However, please note that, assuming a successful 2021 examination, the 2018-2020 stage requirements must be completed by December 31, 2021 in order to continue certification in 2022 and beyond. If you do not complete the 2018-2020 certification stage requirements by the end of 2021, your certification status will be undated to `not certified' until you complete the outstanding certification requirements. AOA Certification Entry Pathway Beginning December 1, 2017 and extending until December 31, 2022, any physician trained in a three-year AOA-accredited Family Medicine Residency Program, or an AOA-accredited Family Medicine Residency Program that has received ACGME accreditation or pre-accreditation, is eligible to apply for Family Medicine Certification. Qualifying candidates may enter the AOA Training Pathway starting December 1, 2017 and will have through December 31, 2022 to meet the certification requirements. For further details, see page 3. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) At the time of this publication (September 2020), European Union (EU) residents are not eligible to register for the Family Medicine Certification Examination. For further clarification, contact us at (877) 223-7437.
