LOBBYING:

Association and the Colorado Society of Clinical Neurologists.

COLORADO STROKE BILL:

This legislation was written by Jack Pommer then aid to Boulder House Representative Todd Saliman, and the AHA Desert Mountain Affiliate Stroke Committee (Chair, RL Hughes, MD) and passed in March 2002 by both the Colorado House and Senate after testimony by Dr. Richard Hughes among others. Governor Bill Owens signed the bill into law in May 2002. This legislation has set up a statewide advisory board on stroke policy through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, now the Colorado Stroke Alliance. There is now a Stroke Registry in Colorado, including the University Hospital and Denver Health Medical Center.

PRIMARY STROKE CENTER CERTIFIATIONS:

The JCAHO Disease specific certification process has partnered with the ASA, via the ASA Advisory Committee (RL Hughes, MD, member) and the ASA Primary Stroke Center Certification Sub- Committee (RL Hughes, MD, Member). This certification has begun, and is the most requested certification of the JCAHO programs.

COMPREHENSIVE STROKE CENTER CERTIFICATION:

In the summer of 2005, the Comprehensive Stroke Center guidelines were published and the ASA committee for CSC was formed (RL Hughes, MD, Member). Drs. Richard Hughes and Anthony Furlan have presented their analysis of what key factors constitute a CSC and distinguish the CSC from a PSC. These recommendations will be carried forward with other specialty organizations.
