Donald Withrington Scholarship in Modern Scottish History

Summary

There is one Donald Withrington Scholarship in Modern Scottish History available for the 2021-22 academic year. The scholarship offers £6,000 per annum for the duration of the full time campus based postgraduate degree course which will contribute towards the cost of Tuition Fees and maintenance. Depending on the nature of the degree, the scholarship may be awarded either for one year or for a maximum of three years.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic potential and financial need.

Eligibility criteria:

The scholarship is open to both:

- Full time applicants commencing their postgraduate degree course in any aspect of post-Reformation Scottish History in either September 2021 (for Postgraduate Taught) or October 2021 (for Postgraduate Research). To be considered for the scholarship, you will need to hold an offer of admission for a full time campus based postgraduate degree programme starting in either September or October 2021.

- Full time students currently studying a postgraduate degree course in any aspect of post-Reformation Scottish History, who will still be studying campus based in the 2021-22 academic year.

Candidates:

The scholarship is open to both Home, Rest of UK, and International students. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic potential and financial need. Applicants should have achieved, or expect to achieve, at least an upper second class honours degree (or international equivalent).

Guidelines for Applicants

Academic merit will be judged on previous years’ academic performance which should be evidenced by a transcript.

Please advise how you intend to fund your postgraduate studies and provide details of your financial circumstances for consideration. 

General Terms and Conditions

The scholarship will be subject to the scholarship recipient making satisfactory progress in their degree. The scholarship will lapse if the scholar ceases to study an eligible degree programme or leaves the University of Aberdeen. The scholarship can only be held by students of the University – they cannot be transferred to another institution.

Events and Reports

Scholarship recipients are expected to attend an annual Donor event and any other events related to the Scholarships Programme. They will also be required to write a short annual report at the end of the academic year which is to be submitted to the University of Aberdeen Development Trust who will forward it to the donor. The Development Trust will provide a standard template for the report.

Selection Process

A scholarship panel will consider the applications, shortlist the candidates and make the award.

Notification of Award

The outcome of scholarship applications will be communicated by email.

Are you currently a student at the University of Aberdeen?: Please provide your current University of Aberdeen student ID number, and when your studies commenced.

If you are not a current University of Aberdeen student, please provide your University of Aberdeen Applicant Reference Number (this is the 10 digit number which you will find on any correspondence you have received from the Admissions department).

Degree Programme you are studying/applying for: Please write the name of the postgraduate degree programme at the University of Aberdeen for which you hold an offer of admission.

If you are a current postgraduate student applying for the Donald Withrington Scholarship, please supply the details of the degree course you are studying at the University of Aberdeen.

Fee Status: Please select your fee status as detailed in your offer of admission from the University of Aberdeen.

Scholarship Information: Please select the ‘Donald Withrington Scholarship’ as the scholarship you are applying for. If you are applying for more than one scholarship, please only select scholarships that you are eligible to apply for.

Previous Scholarships: Please list any other scholarships that you have been awarded or have applied for for your postgraduate course that are not already listed on the form.

Personal Statement: Please upload a personal statement. In no less than 500 words; making reference to your academic achievements and motivation for your postgraduate degree programme, please give reasons why you believe you should be considered for an award. If you have received any prizes or academic awards, please provide details.

If you will be commencing a Postgraduate Degree by Research, please give an outline summary of your proposed area of research. Please also advise how you intend to fund your postgraduate studies and provide details of your financial circumstances.

The maximum file size for the personal statement is 1MB.

Referee Details: Please provide the name, position and contact details of one academic referee who may be approached to comment on your academic achievement.

Supporting documentation: Please upload your supporting documentation – academic transcript and CV. Please note that you can only upload a maximum of 2 documents. The maximum file size is 1MB per document.
