PREFACE
The International Association of Universities and its IAU/UNESCO Information Centre on Higher Education are pleased to present the Eighteenth Edition of the International Handbook of Universities, which offers updated, comprehensive information on university-level institutions worldwide.
The Handbook was first published by the International Association of Universities in 1959 in response to the growing demand for authoritative information about universities and other institutions of higher education. It has grown considerably over the years in both the quantity and the quality of entries; today, it includes around 10,000 institutions that are considered to be of university level by the competent national authority or academic body in 183 countries and territories. Basic information on other institutions of higher education is to be found in the directory-style World List of Universities and Other Institutions of Higher Education1 , which contains some 18,000 institutions entries. The differentiation between university level and other institutions of higher education is based solely on the distinction made by the competent national higher education body of each country.
The Handbook is produced entirely from the IAU/UNESCO Information Centre on Higher Education database. For the present edition, entries have been updated and extensively revised and enlarged to take account of important changes in the organization and structure of higher education. The full wealth of institutional data in the IAU/UNESCO Information Centre -- including the information in the Handbook and World List, as well as the data on the higher education systems and credentials offered in 183 countries -- is also available on the World Higher Education Database CD-Rom2 .
The compilation of the Handbook involves work on documents in many languages, covering a wide range of continuously evolving systems of higher education. Every effort has been made to ensure that the entries are as comprehensive as possible and that the information is accurate. The IAU/UNESCO Information Centre on Higher Education is indebted to those many universities, governmental agencies and academic bodies which have provided material for this Edition to make it a unique and authoritative information source. Where information was not available in time for inclusion, entries have remained the same as in the previous edition, the date of the last update being indicated at the bottom of the entry when known.
The production of the Handbook, World List and World Higher Education Database CD-Rom is part of the drive by the International Association of Universities and UNESCO to provide access to information on higher education worldwide. Two further publications of the Association, the Monograph series Issues in Higher Education3 , and the quarterly scholarly journal Higher Education Policy4 provide a deeper and more analytical understanding of higher education worldwide.

GUIDE TO THE ENTRIES
This Edition of the International Handbook of Universities comprises entries for around 10,000 university-level institutions in 183 countries and territories.
COUNTRY CHAPTERS Entries are selected on the basis of the information contained in the World List of Universities and Other Institutions of Higher Education, which, in turn, is based on listings provided by the appropriate higher education authorities in the countries concerned. For this revised Edition of the Handbook, questionnaires were sent to those degree-granting institutions that were identified by the national bodies as being of university level. The inclusion or omission of an institution, therefore, does not imply any judgement on the part of the IAU/UNESCO Information Centre on Higher Education as to the status or quality of that institution. Similarly, the designations employed for countries and territories are those in use in the United Nations system and do not imply any expression of opinion with regard to their status or the delimitations of their frontiers.
INSTITUTIONAL ENTRIES Membership of an institution in the International Association of Universities is indicated by an asterisk (*) preceding its name.
The individual entries within each country are generally listed within Public and Private sections, where relevant, with postal address and telecommunication, e-mail and website information. The name of each institution is given first in English, followed by the name in the national language(s), where appropriate. Where available, the names and full contact details of the Academic Head, the Chief Administrative Officer, and the Director of International Relations are given.
The lists of faculties, colleges, departments, schools, institutes, etc., are intended primarily as a general guide to the academic structure of the institutions of which they form a part. They normally include the various fields of study offered (standardized list). The names of heads at that level are provided where available and are followed by brief descriptions of the history and structure of the institution and, where available, by information on co-operation programmes with university institutions in other countries.
Admission requirements are usually listed for courses leading to a first degree or similar qualification. Special requirements for admission to studies leading to higher degrees and specialized diplomas are indicated where appropriate.
The names of degrees, diplomas and professional qualifications are generally given in the language of the country concerned. The duration of studies, indicated in years or semesters, is normally the minimum period required.
Tuition fees, library holdings, special facilities and student services available in each university are also indicated when provided.
Overall Academic Staff (including Staff with Doctorates) and Student Enrolment statistics complete the entry and include a breakdown of numbers for foreign students and part-time, evening and distance education students, if available. A breakdown by men and women for both Academic Staff and Students is also given when available.
