JOB PURPOSE
SheDecides is a global political movement driving change, fuelled by actions in communities, with young people at its heart. The movement was born in January 2017 as a result of the reinstatement and expansion of the Global Gag Rule and has grown significantly since then. The movement is now guided by a Strategy (2019-2021) and a costed workplan and is supported by the SheDecides Support Unit (SDSU).
The movement seeks a Communications Advisor – Maternity Cover, to oversee the development and implementation of the Movement’s communications strategy and capacity.
The SDSU is an independent entity hosted by IPPF. The Communications Advisor – Maternity Cover reports to the Lead of the SDSU, who reports to the Guiding Group (Board) of SheDecides Champions.
KEY TASKS
The Communications Advisor – Maternity Cover will:
• Further develop and implement SheDecides brand and communications strategy, reflective of the Movement’s vision and direction as outlined in the 2019-2021 Strategy and emerging Theory of Change. This will include setting meaningful targets, delivering on agreed commitments and monitoring their implementation across a variety of audiences.
• Work closely with the Lead and specialist team members within the SDSU to create and publish relevant content and tools that support SheDecides’ growth across movement building, champion engagement and policy translation programs of work.
• Prepare and/or oversee time-sensitive production of creative materials, including brand assets, collateral and video, press releases, social media content, newsletters, website content, campaign development toolkits and materials, for external use.
• Provide support, advice and guidance about communications and brand strategy to Champions and local movements.
• Build strategic relationships with relevant global movements and organisations, strengthening SheDecides by deepening key alliances and collaborative efforts.
• Nurture relationships with Champions and/or their communications teams to ensure solidarity, strategic amplification of communications and effective joint working.
• Support the growth of the global network of individual and organisational Friends via production of engaging and active content, communications, segmentation and campaigns.
• Maximise impact of priority SheDecides moments for the global movement, including action to deliver on SheDecides Day
• Review and analyse performance of communications channels and activities – utilizing evaluation for improvement in reaching strategy objectives.
• Commission, oversee and manage relationships with external agencies, freelancers and consultants as required.
• Manage media relationships, press requests and public relations activities, including social media.
• Contribute to planning, review and reporting on the SDSU strategy and workplans
General
• Ensure gender and diversity is effectively mainstreamed within the remit of the post and in line with IPPF’s Gender Equality Policy.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with all members of staff, and contacts within and outside the Federation.
• Become familiar with the Federation’s Health and Safety Programme and Guidelines for using Visual Display Units. To do everything possible to ensure a healthy and safe working environment, including following instructions and guidance.

• Undertake any other reasonable duties as may be requested from time to time.
• RESPONSIBILITIES
a) Staff responsibilities carried out by the job holder
• Supervision of consultants and/or temporary staff as may be required.
b) Financial responsibilities carried out by the job holder
• Responsible for budgets and donor reports related to communications
c) Advisory responsibilities carried out by the job holder.
• Will advise and hold key working relationships with:
- All members of the SheDecides Support Unit;
- SheDecides Board (Guiding Group);
- SheDecides Champions
- Communications and creative agencies, and other key consultants supporting the SDSU;
- Local SheDecides movements – their Champions, support teams and key partners;
- IPPF colleagues.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
• EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS
• Educated to degree level in a related discipline e.g. communications, public policy, international development, gender.
• Masters level or equivalent desirable.
• Qualification/membership of professional institute/body in a related field e.g. communications, marketing, public relations, desirable.
• PROVEN ABILITY
• Significant professional experience in related discipline: marketing, brand management, communications, public relations.
• Experience in advancing gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights
• Experience working collaboratively and in partnerships on multi country initiatives.
• SKILLS
• A self-starter, with resilience, interpersonal flexibility and ability to work effectively and credibly with young people and people from diverse backgrounds and countries
• Experience delivering results through others and ability to organise and plan own work and the work of others in order to meet agreed objectives.
• Highly developed written and verbal communications skills and ability to present information to a range of audiences.
• Excellent ability to plan, monitor and implement major projects to agreed deadlines and within budget, often with conflicting priorities.
• Clear understanding of the strategic role of communications to impact on positive organisation results.
• Experience working in a fast-moving and complex organisation, across multiple countries and regions
• Demonstrated ability to think and operate strategically and transform strategies into results
• Excellent English written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to speak Spanish, French or Arabic desirable
PERSONAL COMPETENCE
• Progressive attitude towards the issues of women’s sexual health and rights and is willing to learn more about the subject.
• Willing to travel internationally, approximately 50 days a year, once international travel becomes possible
• Awareness of and sensitivity to the multi-cultural and diverse environment in which IPPF operates.
• Integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Understanding of and a commitment to safeguarding including child protection, in a local and international context.
• Supportive of a woman’s right to choose and to have access to safe abortion services.
