Special Education Faculty Achievements

• Kathlene Shank, Rebecca Cook, Christy Hooser, and Thomas Sinclair each made individual research/paper presentations on the Fall 2003, 25th Annual Teacher Education Division of Council for Exceptional Children refereed program.

• Kathlene Shank Chairs the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Subcommittee on Knowledge and Skills, and serves on the CEC Professional Standards and Practices Standing Committee.

• Rebecca Cook is Historian for the Illinois Teacher Education Division professional organization and Kathlene Shank is Secretary/Treasurer of this state organization.

• Kathlene Shank is Chair of the Illinois Alliance of Special Education Administrators Standing Committee on Certification.

• Kathlene Shank serves on the Area 9 Special Olympics Games Committee

• Drs. Shank and Hooser coordinated 550 student volunteers for the Fall 2004 Family Fun Festival and 600 volunteers for Spring 2004 Area 9 Special Olympics.

• Kathlene Shank reviews articles for Teaching Exceptional Children, a national level, refereed journal.

• Kathlene Shank serves on the Advisory Board of Teaching Exceptional Children.

• Christy Hooser and Kathlene Shank are Council for Exceptional Children/NCATE program reviewers.

• Kathlene Shank serves on the NCATE Board of Examiners.

• Christy Hooser is the 2004-2005 Chair of the College Assessment Committee and the Committee on Unit Assessment.

• James Basham is the Illinois Teacher Education Division Newsletter Editor and Illinois Teacher Education Division Webmaster.

o Brown, M. S., and Bergen, D. (2003, October) Play/social interactions of children with disabilities at centers in an inclusive preschool. Interactive poster presented at the Division for Early Childhood Conference on Young Children with Special Needs. Washington, D. C.

• Mark Brown serves on the Publication Board Committee (2003-2004)- Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI).

• Mark Brown also serves as an Executive Board committee member for Illinois Chapter for the American Association on Mental Retardation

(I-AAMR).

• Mark Brown reviews manuscripts for the Teaching Exceptional Children, Journal of Research in Childhood Education, and Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) journals.

• The EIU Sigma Rho Epsilon Chapter: Order of Omega Award for Outstanding Service in the Field of Special Education was presented to Dr. Mark Brown Spring 2004.

• Rebecca Cook participated in the planning of the Illinois Higher Education Faculty Institute and attended the institute. The topic this year was "Qualities of Effective Teachers".

• Rebecca Cook published an article in the Young Exceptional Child, a national journal in early childhood special education. The article was "Embedding Assessment into the Routines of the Inclusive Settings in Early Childhood." This is a practical article that assists teachers in planning for and reorganizing assessment so teachers can comfortably assess young children without them feeling the pressure of a testing situation.

• Rebecca Cook maintains a webpage on first through third year teachers who have graduated from the Department of Special Education. The webpage addresses problems that new teachers face and a list of solutions from experienced professionals in the field. The new teachers select the most appropriate suggestion and implement it. The website also provides resources (website, books, articles, etc. that relate to general teaching, lesson plans, adaptations, disabilities, stress management, math, and reading.

• Rebecca Cook chairs the Department of Special Education Department Personnel Committee, the College of Education and Professional Studies Research CU Pool Committee, and has chaired a university search committee for the Admissions Office at the University.

• Joy Russell is a member of the IAASE Linking Ad Hoc Committee 2004- Present, is the Chair of the Statewide Professional Development Instruction Design Team Learning Behavior Specialist, 2002-2004 and is a member of the Statewide Professional Development Instructional Design Team (1998-2003), Mentoring and Induction, Regional Office of Education Program Assessment, and Standards Aligned Classroom.

• Joy Russell is a Program Reviewer for Higher Education Accreditation, Illinois State Board of Education, 2002- Present.

• Ellen Humphrey presented to the SAIL Parent Group on “What is EIASE, What Do We Do, and How Does that Pertain to Your Child?” (EIASE is Eastern Illinois Area Special Education.)
