RESPECT YOURSELF: Give your best effort, do your work, learn from your mistakes.

RESPECT OTHERS: Be on time; respect the space of others; be kind to others.

We all make mistakes, and we want an atmosphere conducive to learning.

RESPECT THE SCHOOL: Follow school rules and the code of conduct, including, but not limited to,

Bring Your Own Device (when appropriate and for instructional purposes only, with teacher

permission.)

SPANISH OBJECTIVES: students will be able to:

1. Exchange ideas and information in Spanish using complete sentences, complex sentences, and some phrases and words, when appropriate.

2. Understand basic spoken and written Spanish, and understand familiar content presented in authentic materials, conversations.

3. Present orally and in writing information in Spanish that becomes increasingly complex.

4. Present skits, monologues and dialogues in Spanish in loud, clear voices.

5. Interact with others in Spanish without preparation. (Mistakes are more common in interpersonal communication that is not practiced.)

6. Combine new language with old language to create and express new ideas and to ask new questions.

7. Understand Hispanic culture within context of language learning and demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures.

8. Understand how the study of Spanish will benefit students now and in the future.

SPANISH 1 THEMATIC UNITS:

There are 3 thematic units which encompass most of Avancemos 1, Preliminary Chapter through chapter 4B with some of chapter 6 (not necessarily in order). The units are:

Mucho Gusto; Nosotros los Jovenes – los pasatiempos y el día escolar; Buen Provecho y Salud

(Nice to meet you; We kids – pastimes and school day; Foods and Health)

*The students will be responsible for some grammar and vocabulary that is not in the text, so maintaining notes is important. We will also use many other resources in the classroom.

SPANISH 2 THEMATIC UNITS:

There are 3 thematic units which encompass most of Avancemos 1 chapters 5-8 and Avancemos 2 chapters 1-3 and some of unit 7 (not necessarily in order). The units are:

La Vida Diaria y el Hogar; Tiendas y Restaurantes; Ocio y Viajes

(Daily life and home; Stores and restaurants; Leisure and travel)

*The students will be responsible for some grammar and vocabulary that is not in the text, so maintaining notes is important. We will also use many other resources in the classroom.

GRADING POLICY: I grade using the Total Points System.

- Summative Assessments (unit tests, essays, and recorded speaking tests, PBAs) = 100 pts.

- Weekly assessments including, but not limited to, vocabulary and grammar quizzes, short writing assignments, short dialogues; brief listening activities) = 10 – 50 pts.

- Homework completion will be noted in the gradebook, but is ungraded.

GRADING: 93-100 = A, 90-92 = A-, 87-89 = B+, 83-86=B, 80-82=B-, 77-79 = C+

73-76=C, 70-72=C-, 67-69=D+, 64-66=D, 63 or lower = E

GRADEBOOK: Grades will generally be entered into book within one week for quizzes and dialogues, but

long assignments such as essays, projects, recorded monologues, and tests may take longer.

ZERO policy: Students who do not turn in work may earn a zero for that work if that work is not turned in

within 7 school days despite reminders.

RETAKES – For modern languages, assessments that require student production of original work in speaking and writing (summative) can be reassessed and averaged in with the original grade if the following criteria have been met:

*The student has earned a 76% or below on the initial assessment.

*The student has completed all homework.

*The student has conferenced briefly with the teacher.

*The student has completed all remediation work (when applicable).

*Reassessment does not pertain to final exams.

ASSESSMENTS/PROJECTS: Students will be graded on proficiency in the 5 key areas of World Language

(listening, speaking, reading, writing, culture) which includes vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Long-term assignments will be accepted late with a penalty of 5% per school day up to 7 school days.

Because homework is linked to daily class instruction, it will not be accepted late except in the case of excused absences.

CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION: Students are expected to complete class work

including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are expected to use Spanish in class.

HOMEWORK: Nightly study is imperative in world language. Students may have a weekly quiz on vocabulary/grammar in addition to other assessments that are based on all vocabulary/grammar from the class. (Students must practice and use all vocabulary learned for the year. The class is cumulative, so all words should be practiced and used all year.) Written homework will be assigned as needed.

REMEDIATION AND ENRICHMENT: Based on the needs of the students, remediation assignments may be given to some students. Students will also have the opportunity to complete enrichment assignments. The optional enrichment assignments may be averaged in with the grade. There are no extra credit assignments at all for world language students, per department policy.

EXTRA PRACTICE: Students will use the textbook Avancemos. They will have a hard copy of the textbook that should be brought to class daily, and the online textbook has a wonderful home tutor under the student resources in addition to clear explanations and practice for grammar. The textbook and all textbook resources are available through Clever portal. Other websites that are wonderful for practice are:

ABSENCES: Students should have no more than 12 absences per semester in order to earn a passing grade for the semester, per high school course regulations.

()

* When a student is absent, he/she must make up missed quizzes and tests

within a week of returning to school. The student is responsible for make up work, and

should not rely on the teacher for reminders.

*Absent students must check the class website and google classroom site for work.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES AND CONSEQUENCES:

1. Students are expected to use Spanish in the classroom. English should only be used with permission from the teacher. Posters to facilitate language use are in the room as guides.

2. Students should enter with paper, pencil, text, completed homework, and planner every day.

1. Pencils should be sharpened before the start of class. Students must get permission before leaving their seats during class.

1. The restroom should be used before class begins. In the event of an emergency, the student must ask permission to use the restroom and must write his/her name, time out, and time in on the sign-out sheet and have their planners signed by me.

2. Students should be in their seats completing the warm up at the beginning of each class. These may be subject to grading.

1. Students should respect themselves, others, and the school/materials. Examples of each are given at the top of the expectation sheet. The code of conduct governs student dress and behavior expectations. If a student misbehaves, I will follow these procedures (with exceptions for severe misbehavior or school-wide intervention procedures).

A. Verbal warning from teacher

B. Phone call to parent and assignment that is an incident reflection.

C. Referral to administrator. ()

HONOR CODE: Please note that use of a translation program (i.e. “google translate”) is not acceptable for

original student generated work.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: Students must have a separate binder and notebook for Spanish class. It is essential that they bring this each day, as we have thematic units that have additional material that is not included in the textbook. Students will need to take notes, and they should keep any extra notes that I prepare for them. Students also need their textbooks and pencils/pens daily. Earbuds are necessary for computer work.

HOW CAN YOU INCREASE YOUR SUCCESS IN THE SPANISH CLASSROOM?

- Ask questions when you don’t understand; take good notes; keep handouts organized.

- Study for 25-30 minutes every day. Make/use flashcards (or digital flashcards) for the vocabulary. Use the websites; they provide wonderful practice!

- Use the language. If you can ask a question in Spanish, do it. If you can say something to your Spanish classmates in Spanish, do it. (Only when you are permitted to talk, of course.)

- Complete your coursework in a timely manner. Ask for help when needed.

E-mail is the best way to reach me. I should respond within one business day.
