MMPI-2 Structural Summary

Instructions for MMPI-2 Interpretation Homework

Dates that reports are due: April 8 and April 22

For the final two homework assignments for the Seminar in Personality Assessment, you will be given the MMPI-2 scores of real psychiatric outpatients and asked to interpret the results. The purpose of this exercise is to give you a close working knowledge of the MMPI, and to provide practice in systematically interpreting test results.

In formulating your interpretations, you should (a) draw on the interpretive suggestions and strategies described in Greene’s book, and (b) record your interpretations in the exact format with the same headings that Green uses for Example 1 and Example 2 in Chapter 8. The attached sheet provides the headings for this format. The same format is available in Word on Dr. Wood’s website. I suggest you download the Word document and type in the relevant information under the headings.

In addition to providing a written interpretation following the outline provided, you should create and hand in the following supplemental materials:

1) Create an MMPI-2 profile in which the patient’s profile is plotted along with the prototypical profile for patients with his/her codetype.

2) Create a validity scale profile/configuration such as the profiles in Figures 3.4 and 3.5 (Greene, p. 117).

3) Fill in the correct numbers on the blank MMPI-2 Structural Summary that I will provide to you. (It may be that the scores I provide to you are incomplete, so that you can only fill in some of the blanks on the Structural Summary).

MMPI-2 Structural Summary

Provide a narrative that describes the most important features or findings from the Structural summary. Keep the statements brief and to the point (see Greene, p. 390 for an example) so that the main findings are summarized in a paragraph. Remember that in some cases it may be as important to say what the patient is not experiencing as to say what he/she is experiencing.

Fill in and submit a Structural Summary. A blank form will be provided to you by the instructor.

Profile Interpretation

On pages 396-398, Green provides an interpretation with parenthetical references to specific scales or indexes so clinicians can see the source(s) for the statements in the interpretation. In your report, follow the same format. That is, include parenthetical references to specific scales or indexes so I can see the source for your statements.
