Students enrolled in the course will read several novels from different genres, cultures, and literary periods. Your summer reading assignment is to read Voltaire’s Candide. After finishing the novel, you are expected to express your understanding, response, and critical analysis of the novel by creating one of the following projects. The project you choose will give you an opportunity to demonstrate your creative and analytical abilities. It is highly suggested that you purchase your own copy of the novel so that you can write and highlight important passages. Summer Reading Novel: CandideAuthor: Voltaire Translation: Henry Morley Copyright: 2003Project Options: Interview: Write an interview with the main character. The interview should consist of you asking questions that address the main character’s personality, morals, beliefs, relationship with other characters, motives, and other important issues in the novel.Soundtrack: Create a soundtrack for the novel. The songs you choose should relate to the theme, main character, chapter, or important scene from the book. You may choose a song written by another artist or create your own. The soundtrack must include a cover that relates to the novel.Newspaper: Create a newspaper that would be delivered to one of the characters in the novel. Make sure to include articles, announcements, and headlines that reveal important events from the novel.Talk Show: Record a talk show in which you conduct an interview with the main characters from the novel. The interview should consist of you asking questions that reveal important aspects of the character’s personality traits, morals, beliefs, relationships with other characters, motives, and other important issues in the novel.Artistic Response: Create a painting, woodcarving, photo album, sculpture, or any other artistic expression that represents and relates to the theme, characters, and plot of the novel. Note: Shoebox and poster board projects will not meet the project criteria. Due Date: The summer reading project is due the first week of school.GRADING RUBRIC FOR SUMMER READING PROJECTSuperior Project-100 points: The student’s project is unique and original. The details and content reflect that the student has a deep interpretation and analysis of the text. The ideas and content have significant relevance to the text. Project demonstrates extra effort and reflection.Accomplished Project-90 points: The majority of the student’s project is unique. The details and content of the project reflect that the student has a thorough analysis and interpretation of the text. There are minor lapses in focus, but the ideas generally demonstrate relevance to the text. The project demonstrates great effort, but some ideas need to be developed more.Adequate-80 points: The student’s project is average and meets the assignment criteria. The details and content of the project reflect that the student needs to develop a deeper analysis and interpretation of the text. Some ideas are not thoroughly developed and have some lapses in focus and relevance to the text.Fair 70: The Student’s project presented some creativity and ideas that show relevance to the meaning of the text, but most details and content reflect that student had difficulty interpreting and developing an analysis of the novel. Insufficient: 60-0: The Student’s project demonstrate no evidence of reading the text, or the student did not follow the requirements for the assignment. ................
