Structures of the Synthesis Essay- 300-500 words/ 4-5 paragraphs/academic voice(no I’s).

Structure #1

1. Introduction- Both titles and authors

-Thesis-answer to the topic.

2. Body Paragraphs

Structure #1

Body #1- Text #1

Body #2 – Text #2

Body #3 – Both text #1 and #2.

3. Conclusion- restate thesis, use both authors and texts.

-end with a powerful closing sentence.

Structure #2 – Same as #1 except for the body paragraphs.

Body #1- both text #1 and #2

Body #2 – both text #1 and #2.

Body# 3- Both text 1 and 2 (option)

Before you write- do the 5 steps

Step #1- cue word

Step #2- key words

Step #3- own words

Step #4- write it

Step #5-edit it.

Process:

-Choose your topic

-Organize the information and select a structure.

-Write the synthesis essay,

1. Introduction-authors, titles, thesis

2. Body- 1,2, 3

-topic sentence(point)

-support(illustration)

-further support(explanation)

Each paragraph is connected with a transition word(further, consequently, moreover, etc.)

3. Conclusion begins with a tag- In conclusion, Finally, Therefore…

-summarizes the thesis

ends with a powerful sentence.
