Sample Five Paragraph Essay: Fear Prompt
Sample Five Paragraph Essay: Fear Prompt
The Prompts:
Fear Prompt: We all have fears in life, or at least things or places that make us very uncomfortable. In a five-paragraph essay, explain your fears in detail: what are your three biggest fears, how long have you had these fears, and do you expect to overcome these fears?
Goals Prompt: Every person has goals for his/her life. It is an important aspect of motivating ourselves, keeping focused, and making us who we are and will become. In a five-paragraph essay, explain your three biggest goals right now: what are the goals, how long have you had these goals, what do you need to do to accomplish these goals, and when do you expect to achieve these goals?
Introduction: Remember, you must have 7-15 sentences:
1. An attention grabber
2. Move from general information to specific information about the topic
3. A three-topic thesis statement
Everyone in this world, from a six-year-old child to an eighty-year-old man, has something to fear. A child might fear being in the ocean or the dark; an old man, on the other hand, might fear losing mental capabilities or even life. Although fears might also change throughout a lifetime, most people do remain scared of something. I am no different. I used to fear nuclear war, public speaking, and even my own family members, but I have overcome these fears. There are, however, things I still do fear. The purpose of this essay is to explain my fears of syringes and blood, snakes, and getting old.
Three Body Paragraphs: Remember, you must have 7-15 sentences: (Note: I only have one body paragraph given as a sample)
1. A topic sentence
2. 3-4 EXPLAINED supporting details
3. A strong conclusion sentence
The fear I have had the longest in my life is my fear of syringes and blood. As far back as I can remember, getting a shot or getting blood taken has resulted in my passing out or, sometimes, injury to myself or other people. I cannot actually recall a time that I have gotten a shot or blood taken that I haven’t gotten sick in some way. I do not like the feeling of having a needle pinch my skin, and I especially do not like the feeling of any liquid entering or leaving my veins. Even the slightest pinch, like the small needle from a TB test, makes me queasy. Perhaps most embarrassing, the sight of real blood or the discussion of blood sometimes makes me nauseous! I passed out in my 3rd grade health class when we were discussing blood wounds. For all these reasons, my pathetic fear of syringes and blood will probably not go away anytime soon.
Conclusions: Remember, you must have 7-15 sentences:
1. Restate your thesis
2. Summarize your major body paragraph points
3. Leave the reader with a sense of closure
Whether you are a six year old, an eighty year old, or a thirty-three year old (like myself) you are probably afraid of something. Who knows if my ongoing fears of syringes and blood, snakes, or getting old will ever go away. The syringes and blood fear is probably my worst because it is paralyzing and actually dangerous. It’s not just the needles or getting the blood taken, as I said before. It’s also the sight or discussion of blood that can get me. Snakes, again, only are a problem when I’m out in the wilderness. Even then, though, the encounters with snakes are so rare that I don’t usually worry in the woods. Finally, my fear of getting old will probably never go away, but at least I have a great family and group of friends who make getting older much easier. I might change physically or mentally, but having those people around for support will help. I have gotten over many fears in the past, and there is a small chance I will get over my current fears in the future. Perhaps, overcoming our fears marks our growth and maturity as human beings. I can only say one thing for sure: I am still growing and maturing!
