Project 1 – OSI Model with Applications & Protocols

The intent of this project is to develop a useful reference document while learning the relationship of the major network protocols and applications.

YOU MUST CREATE AN ORIGINAL, FULL-PAGE COPY OF THIS CHART. IF YOU HAND-DRAW YOUR CHART, IT SHOULD BE LARGE ENOUGH TO ADD LOTS OF NOTES DURING THE SEMESTER. YOU MAY NOT SIMPLY SCRATCH SOMETHING ON THIS PAGE AT THE LAST MINUTE.

THIS PROJECT IS FOR YOUR USE DURING THE WHOLE CLASS!

Create a chart that begins with the OSI Seven-layer model on the left-hand side. Next, a column that describes the function of the layer. Then a column that lists the Protocol Data Units (such as Datagrams, Frames, etc) that correspond to each layer in the OSI model. Continue this process for the major hardware or software applications that function in each layer (not all layers have corresponding applications).

The last column should be the TCP/IP model aligned to the appropriate layers of the OSI seven-layer model.

This should result in a document that looks something like this (with the blank spaces filled in!):

|OSI |Function of Layer | PDU |What is in the |Hardware |Protocols |TCP/IP |

| | | |Header? | | |4 Layer Model |

|Application | | | | | | |

| | | | | | | |

|Network | | | |  |  | |

| | | | | | | |

Datalink |

| | |  |  | | |Physical |

| | |  |  | | |

If you can do this on a computer that’s great, but neatly hand-drawn is fine as well (you might need to use legal sized paper if you create the chart by hand). I do want this to be your creation however and not something that you cut-and-pasted from the Internet or a friend. It is fine to use these sources for information gathering!

You may use your chart as a reference during the quizzes and tests, so make sure it is correct!

Good Luck!
