[Pages:8]DRIVER EDUCATION

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Driver Education is an integrated program of classroom work, simulation, and on-thestreet instruction. All sophomores, juniors, and seniors under the age of 21 must successfully complete all phases of the Driver Education program prior to receiving a State of Illinois driver's license. This course will help students learn about traffic laws and become responsible users of the highway transportation system. The State of Illinois requires the parent to certify that the teen has completed at least fifty (50) hours of supervised behind-the-wheel training outside of the Driver Education class. This must be done prior to receiving their driver's license. In addition, students must hold an instruction permit for nine (9) months and one (1) day before obtaining a driver's license. The State of Illinois also requires the teen to have passed eight (8) classes in the previous two semesters in order to take Driver Education. Students will be charged a driver education fee of $250 for this course. Students enrolled in first semester driver education must pay by the last day of summer registration or the student will be dropped. Students enrolled in second semester driver education must pay their driver education fee at a date to be determined in December or the student will be dropped. In addition, students will incur a $20 permit fee from the State of Illinois. This fee covers the permit cost and the cost of the student's first driver's license. The permit fee must be paid during the first week of school of the semester that you have driver education class.

IV. COURSE POLICIES

1. Attendance is very important in driver education. Students are required to attend all sessions of classroom, simulators and behind the wheel instruction. If a student accumulates twelve (12) unexcused absences during the semester, their grade will be an "F" for the course. If a student is absent fifteen (15) or more days during the semester, whether the absences are excused or unexcused, the student will receive an "F" for the course due to absences.

2. The school policy will be enforced on student tardiness.

3. The students' grade is based on 90% tests/final exam and 10% class work.

Students that score a D+ or lower on a test are recommended to retake the test. They are allowed to reassess or retake the test up to two times if needed in the time frame of three weeks from date of original assessment

(ending one week before the end of the semester). If, on the first retake the student receives a grade C- or better they will not be given a second retake. In order for a student to re-test, the student must complete an alternative assignment to help them prepare for the re-test before the re-test is given. Students that score a grade of C- or higher on the original test are allowed to reassess or re-test one time in the time frame of three weeks from date of original assessment (ending one week before end of the semester). Please note: If a student takes the re-test and scores lower than the original score, the lower score stands. In order for a student to re-test, the student must complete an alternative assignment to help them prepare for the re-test before the re-test is given. Class work will consist of the chapter worksheet handouts, chapter preassessment sheet handouts and two article summaries per chapter. Class work can be redone/edited from the original assignment (ending one week before the end of the semester). Extra credit is not available in this class.

4. No food or drink is allowed in the classroom.

5. Parent agrees to drive the student fifty (50) hours of behind the wheel during the course before the student can obtain a driver's license.

6. Student will need to hold a permit for nine (9) months and one (1) day before he/she can obtain a driver's license.

7. Student will need to pass both phases of driver education (lab and classroom) in order to obtain a driver's license.
