Includes the study of various disabilities and provisions for educating children through 22 years of age in public schools. Elements include: systems for delivering services within the public school system including characteristics of disabilities, IDEA Law, inclusion, IEP's and RTI.Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:Discuss current issues regarding special ed law, implementing IEP, assessing special education students, and appropriate interventions and accomodations for students Explain the concept of inclusion and formulate a personal philosophy on inclusive education Identify and describe various disabilities, including academic, behavioral and physical characteristicsDemonstrate understanding of the referral process, assessment, and developing general knowledge about Individual Education Programs (IEPs) including the required participation of general education teachersDescribe the principles of effective collaboration between general and special education teachers and staff Apply oral and written vocabulary appropriately when describing needs, disabilities, treatments, interventions or educational practices Identify accommodations, modifications, and learning strategies for the student with disabilities ................
