How to Write a Background Paragraph?

After the thesis statement and introduction paragraph, you should incorporate a background paragraph into your paper. Remember that paragraphs are not determined by the number of sentences but instead by the quality of their sentences and structure. This paragraph should include vital background information that is essential in PROVIDING THE READER with a BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR OVERALL TOPIC. This paragraph does NOT argue any of the support themes in your thesis.

The focus of your paragraph should be to explain your understanding of the qualities/characteristics of “great leadership.”

This paragraph is very important because it sets the context for how you are comparing Andrew Jackson to the concept of “great leadership.”

REMEMBER: You are giving the reader FACTUAL, OBJECTIVE INFORMATION that will help the reader better understand your topic. You do not need to cite any COMMON KNOWLEDGE that you use!!!! An example of this would be a dictionary definition!!!

You should include specific information from any of the leadership resources we have covered- such as famous quotations you think are particularly pertinent!
