Grading: Final grades will be based on the ten point percentile scale as outlined in the general course polices and the college catalog.

Final grades in this course will be based on 4 Tests and Homework, (with the highest test grade doubled to make 5 test grades total.) While individual grades will be calculated on a points-earned divided by points-possible basis, final grades will be roughly calculated on the following percentages*:

Tests……………………..80%

Homework………………20%

*Note: These percentages are subject change should assignments being cancelled or changed at the discretion of the instructor.

Calculators: Students are required to have a calculator for this course and be familiar with its operation. Any student whose educational plan includes Calculus should consider buying a graphing calculator. No calculator that is a symbolic manipulator (TI-89 and above for Texas Instruments) will be permitted for classroom/exam use. Cell phones may NOT be used as a calculator.

Homework: All homework is to be completed on 8 ½ x 11 paper. Works should be legible and answers should be clearly indicated. (Circling your answer is recommended) Each section of problems should be clearly separated on a separate page. (Example: section 2.1 would end on one page and 2.2 would begin on the next.) Do not turn in homework with fringes. All fringes should be removed before the assignment is turned.

Application/Word Problems: The answer to a word problem should be written in sentence format and include proper units. Any such problem where the answer is not written in a sentence will automatically lose points. Problems having incorrect units will automatically lose points. Each penalty is applied separately.

Examples of correct and incorrect answers.

General Course Policies

Attendance: Regular attendance is expected. Any student missing more than two classes will lose one letter grade from their final grade. Any student missing four or more classes will fail the course. Excessive tardiness or leaving early will result in a verbal warning to the student. All subsequent occurrences will result in the student being considered absent for the day.

Students who stop attending class and do not contact their instructor prior to the end of the quarter to discuss their situation will automatically receive an F for the course. Students should also be aware that withdrawal from the course can impact financial aid.

Work Missed Due to Absence: Any work missed due to a student being absent will result in a zero for the missed assignment unless other arrangements have been made with the instructor prior to the absence. Family holidays/vacations are not valid reasons for absence.

Missed Quizzes/Exams: Students will not be allowed to make-up missed quizzes regardless of the reason for the absence. The quiz will count as a zero. Students missing an exam may be given a retake exam at the discretion of the instructor provided the student has contacted the instructor prior to the absence. In cases where a student cannot make contact prior to the absence, extenuating circumstances may be considered.

Early Exams: Early exams due to scheduled absence, for reasons of vacations, etc…will not be given. DO NOT ASK!

Late Work: Out of class assignments will be given. These assignments will be due at the beginning of class. Any assignment not received at that time will result in a zero for the assignment.

Classroom Conduct

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to the college learning environment. The following rules will apply:

• Students will be on time and prepared for class

• Students will show respect to their fellow students and instructor at all times. This includes allowing others to speak, showing respect for individual views and opinions.

• Foul language, vulgarity, racist or sexist comments will not be tolerated in the classroom environment. Freedom of expression is great…rudeness and vulgarity are not.

• Students may bring permitted beverages to class provided they are in an enclosed container such as a travel mug or plastic bottle. No cans, cups, etc…

• During class students are to work on course related materials only. Reading textbooks for other classes, drafting papers, working on homework or other materials, is prohibited.

• Cell phones, pagers, IPods, and other electronic devices are to be turned off and properly stored during class, unless otherwise permitted by the instructor. If you have a need for such a device to be on during the term or during a specific class, you must make arrangements with your instructor prior to class.

• Space permitting, students will be assigned specific testing positions. During a exam/quiz all students will remove non-test related materials from the desk. During the exam no electronic devices are to be used unless specifically authorized by the instructor. Any student using any form of electronic device (pager, cell phone, PDA, etc…) without authorization during a test will have their exam immediately collected. A zero will be given for the exam.

• During class lectures and other presentations students are expected to be attentive to the presentation. Excessive conversations, passing notes, and other disruptive behaviors will not be tolerated. Also, while we all want to look beautiful, lets keep the lipstick, combs, mirrors and other things put away. I promise you, I’ll like you just the way you are.

• Defacing college property (writing on desks, etc…) is prohibited. We know you were here, that’s why I take attendance.

• For the convenience of students and to assist the cleaning staff, trash cans are located in each classroom. Please use them.

• A reminder that tobacco products are not to be used inside college property. This includes the use of chewing tobacco! Smoking is permitted at least 20 ft. from the entrance of the building. Students found violating this policy will be referred to the college for further action.

• Please remove your hats, sunglasses, and other “outdoor” apparel while in the classroom. Coats and sweaters are fine. I like to see my students, not have them hide like mythical beings.

Any student violating one or more of the policies above will (depending on the severity of the infraction) receive one or more the following sanctions.

1. Verbal/Written Warning from the Instructor (Minor infraction)

2. Asked to leave class for the day and receive a zero for all work. Student will be considered absent for the day. (Moderate Infraction or Repeat of a Minor Infraction)

Any subsequent infraction will result in referral to the College and recommendations that the student be removed from the class/that the student receive an F. In cases were the conduct is severe this may be the first action taken. Application of the aforementioned penalties will remain at the discretion of the instructor.

Academic Misconduct: Academic misconduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Students found engaging in academic misconduct will automatically receive an F for any/all assignments in which the academic misconduct was involved. In addition, students may be referred to the College for possible further sanctions up to an including expulsion. For further information on Southern State’s policy relating to academic misconduct refer to the 2007-09 College Catalog.

Plagiarism: If you plagiarize you are a liar and a thief. Students who engage in such behavior will automatically fail the course – NO EXCEPTIONS – Students will automatically be referred the college with a recommendation that they be expelled from the college. It is your responsibility as a student to ensure that you do not plagiarize. If you have questions or doubts, contact your instructor or ask a member of the English faculty to assist you.

College Closed/Cancellation of Class: In the event that the college closes and or classes are cancelled, all assignments, exams, projects, etc…scheduled for that day will be postponed to the next class, unless other instructions are provided by a college faculty/staff member.

In the event that extra class time is needed because of cancellation due to inclement weather, your instructor reserves the right to add/omit assignments, alter schedules, add class time or class days as permitted under the Southern State Inclement Weather Policy outlined in the 2007-09 Catalog.

Notification of Cancellation/Closing: It is the student’s responsibility to monitor weather conditions and listen to local television/radio for college closures. Students should use their best judgment where road conditions/weather is poor and the college has not closed. However, this does not relieve students of their responsibility to notify their instructor of their absence when the college is not closed.

Disabilities: Accommodations may be available for students with documented disabilities. Students must contact the Disabilities Services Coordinator, Connie Horne, at Central Campus. No accommodation will be given unless specifically authorized by the Disability Services Office.

Tutoring: Any student needing assistance with their coursework may request tutoring assistance free of charge, by contact the Tutoring Office at ext. 2881 or 2880, by requesting a tutor online under the ‘request a tutor’ tab on the SSCC website or you may pick up a tutoring application from the faculty secretary or the tutoring office at Central, filling it out and returning to the college offices.

Changes to Course Policies: The instructor reserves the right to alter any/all policies outlined in the general course policies, course outline, and other procedural materials. All such changes shall be provided to students, in writing, at least one class prior to taking effect. Absence on the day the policy is issued will not exempt a student from the changes. This will not apply to schedule changes and typographical errors.
