Investment Simulation Project

Oftentimes, the best way to learning is by doing and stock investing is no exception. Although the class doesn’t start discussing strategies until mid-semester, this is a good chance for you to get familiarized with putting buy and sell orders. You’ll realize there’s more to investing than choosing stocks. There’s a whole emotional side that gets caught in deciding whether to hold or sell stocks.

Rules of the Simulation

1. You must hold your stock holdings for a minimum of 1 week (no quick flips during earnings)

2. For your initial positions, you can have a max of 1/3 of your portfolio value in 1 stock

Here are some basic instructions to using the simulation. There are a lot of tools and features of the online simulation that are not covered. The best way to learn how to use the simulator is by exploring the site and trying things out.

Please create only ONE account for our competition and sign-in the name on the simulator sheet in class. Any attempts to cheat will automatically disqualify you and boot you out of the class.

To access the simulation on regular basis, the website URL is . Once you get on the page, go to the Stock Simulator page and sign-in with your username and password.

On the right, click on “Trade Stock.” Make sure you know the ticker symbol for the company that you want to buy (Ex. MSFT for Microsoft). When you are the order entry screen, enter the symbol in and the numbers of shares that you want to purchase. You will be able to put in different types of orders (which will be discussed in class). Click on “preview order”, which shows the value of the order. Once you’ve made your decision, click on “Submit Order.” There are also “Help Topics” on the right side of the screen to help you answer some common questions.

To sell stocks, you repeat this same procedure, but you click on “Sell” under the Transaction section.

Watchlists are useful for keeping track of potential stocks that you would like to invest in and are just waiting for the right price or time. To access the watchlist, click on “Stock Watch List” on the left side of the screen. Enter the symbol of your choice and make sure to add your stocks with the same watch list name.
