ASSIGNMENT No. 2

This assignment is a project. You are required to study the relevant area / conduct research and prepare a brief report on your findings in the given area. You will have to submit one copy of the report to the tutor within the scheduled period and then present the report/essay in one of the tutorials (the schedule / plan of the tutorial for the presentations will be intimated by the tutor concerned or the Regional Director). The compulsory presentation carries 100 marks, 40 marks for the written report / essay and 60 for the presentation.

Here are given few guidelines for the presentation and the written report:

a) The written report should have an introduction, body and conclusion. It should be written in clear concise and correct English.

b) It should be 5-8 double spaced typed/handwritten pages.

c) The presentation will be assessed and evaluated mainly in

i. Contents of the assignment/report

ii. Communication skills

iii. Language accuracy

iv. Language fluency

v. Presentation style

d) You may use transparencies, charts or any other material to make your presentation impressive.

You will prepare your project on one of the following topics. Your tutor will assign different topics to different students during your classes. For example, if the number of students in your class is twenty, one topic may not be assigned to more than five students.

1. Prepare a lesson plan based on teaching of morphemes. Start your lesson with the general discussion to measure the depth of students’ understanding regarding topic. Give you input with examples and ask them to identify different types of morphemes. In your report of the execution of lesson plan in the classroom, discuss how their understanding has improved as a result of practice they did in the classroom.

2. We have studied that different types of sentences perform different functions such as giving a statement, issuing command, asking a question, making suggestion etc. Select an appropriate dialogue. Analyse how different sentences have been used by the speakers in the dialogue to perform different functions. Submit your report based on the analysis to your tutor. Enclose the script of the dialogue you have analysed, with your report.

3. Study the process of language (L2) learning among children and try to analyse which errors they make more in their writing, whether of chain or of choice. For this purpose, select a group of students, give them a writing task. Analyse it and present your findings in the written report. Also suggest remedial measures that you can take as a teacher to eradicate those errors.

4. A hierarchy of units makes clear the difference between units such as sentence, clause, group, word and morpheme. Explain the different types of sentences and clauses with the help of appropriate examples. Select a text of a suitable length (of at least ten sentences) and analyse this text in terms of the above grammatical units. That is, mark the boundaries of sentences within the text, clauses within each sentence, groups within each clause, words within each group and morphemes within a word.

5. Develop a lesson plan that teaches the difference between the auxiliary verb and main verb. Follow the format of four Ps, that is, preparation, presentation, practice and production. Conduct the lesson in your class and write a report on how you have been able to develop your students’ understanding of the area. Submit your lesson plan and report to your tutor and present your experience / findings in the presentation workshop.

Prepare a report and submit to the tutor well before the presentation.
