Enrollment: Johnson School of the Arts

Prologue Every fall, in a report to the Department of Education, our local school district provides data on the total enrollment.

The data are depicted below.

Enrollment: Johnson 1993-2004

Johnson’s enrollment has decreased over the past few years. We draw approximately ninety students from outside our neighborhood area. The Johnson staff shares the vision that regardless of ethnicity or economic group, we attempt to create balanced classrooms based on a proficiency of student achievement. The Johnson staff continues to advocate and promote neighborhood students to attend school at Johnson. Parent recruitment will be explored through parent-to-parent communication, a brochure about Johnson School of the Arts, promotion of small group instruction, and a focus on recruitment.

The magnet philosophy with the emphasis on the arts has proven to assist in recruitment. Strong efforts to educate our public on the relationship of children’s intellectual/academic development paired with the arts are required by our school. The representation of statistical data in the area of “No Child Left Behind” legislation will require continued efforts in this area with accurate support and representation of our student’s growth. Misrepresentation and misinterpretation of our standardized data is anticipated to cause a negative affect on out enrollment and even more importantly, on the representation of our children.
