iPads are due to be issued in the week beginning 28th November, however they will not will not be issued until the Home Agreement and pupil contract has been returned. Extra copies of the agreement can be picked up from the school office.

This FAQ sheet will begin to answer many of the questions that you may have about our Digital Learning project. If your question is not answered please do not hesitate to contact the school and we can discuss it.

What is involved in our Digital Learning Pilot Project?

Digital Learning is about putting mobile technology into the hands of the pupils to enhance their learning. The mobile device that we have decided to issue is the iPad 2. This decision was taken by SIC Learning Partnership Project Board in consultation with several other groups. The Pilot Project will run until 2018 and will be in partnership with Baltasound Junior High School. Funding for the iPads came from sponsorship from Hub North Scotland, the agency tasked with building the new AHS.

How will 1:1 Digital Learning help my child?

Studies involving similar schemes have shown that pupils are better involved in their learning, with increased motivation and the potential for higher achievement.

Will my child be using their iPad’s every lesson?

The iPads will be used to support learning as appropriate. Use of the iPads will vary from lesson to lesson and from day to day. The technology will enhance rather than replace traditional tools for learning.

When will my child be issued with their iPad?

iPads will be issued in November 2016 once all relevant permission forms and agreements have been received. No iPads will be issued until parents/carers and pupils have signed and returned the Home School Agreement.

Will there be “getting started” sessions for my child to learn the basics of using the iPads?

“Getting started” lessons will take place in November when the iPads are distributed. These will take place in class and will be lead by our own school staff and some visiting teachers. There will be further training taking place throughout the course of this project.

Will my child bring their iPads home?

Yes, they will be expected to use their iPads at home to complete homework tasks and research assignments.

How long will my child have their iPads for?

It is anticipated that your child will continue to use their iPads for as long as they remain a pupil a here at Mid Yell.

Will my child be expected to share their iPads?

No. iPads will be issued to individual pupils. Every pupil is being given their own iPad and it is their responsibility to keep it safe.

Do I need to contribute to the cost of the iPads?

No. The funding for the iPads has come through direct sponsorship from Hub North Scotland.

What responsibilities will my child have for the safe use of the iPad?

Pupils will be expected to bring their iPads to school each day fully charged up. Any technical issues should be brought to attention of the school as soon as possible.

All our pupils have participated in safe use of the internet and digital technologies and they will be expected to follow these guidelines in all their social media and digital interactions. Pupils will be reminded of the safe use of the internet and social networking sights, as well as our local authority policy on taking photos and making videos, prior to the devices being distributed.

What are my responsibilities as a parent/carer?

We would encourage parents/carers to support the school be reinforcing the messages regarding safe use of technology. The use of filters to control access to certain web content at home is recommended. The school website will offer guidance and advice around this area. The school has a management console that looks after the iPads. This allows the school to manage the devices, add new apps remotely and monitor the pupil’s online usage.

It would also be appreciated if parents/carers would encourage their child to fully charge their iPads prior to coming to school and report any breakages or technical issues as soon as possible.

What are the responsibilities of the school?

The school will provide the iPads and the necessary technical support as detailed in the Home and School Agreement. Filtered access to the internet via SIC guest will be provided while pupils are in school. The school will continue to promote safe and responsible use of the internet and social media.

Do I need to provide internet access at home?

No, although it would be an advantage. While it is anticipated that most apps will require web access, this is provided in school. If pupils require web access to complete work, they can use the facility either before or after school or during lunchtime.

What if the iPads get’s damaged or stolen?

Any breakages etc must be reported to school immediately. The school will have insurance to cover damage to and theft of iPads. If the damage is found to bay malicious, there may be consequences.

What happens if there is a technical issue with the iPads?

My question is not here. How can I get an answer?
