Irregular Verb Forms You Should Know By Test 5

Irregular Verb Forms You Should Know By Test 5Notes:1. If a verb is listed here, then all verbs derived from it by the addition of a different prefix will be conjugated the same way: if you know that the forms of fallen are er/sie/es f?llt, ist gefallen ==> you know that the forms of auffallen are er/sie/es f?llt auf, ist aufgefallen.2a. If a verb is not listed here [and Note (1) above does not apply] and you see it on Test 5, you can assume it's a weak verb, with a -t ending in the past participle, and no stem-change in the present tense (remember that if it's a verb ending in -ieren, its past participle won't have a "ge"): lachen ==> er/sie/es lacht, hat gelacht. 2b. More generally, you should start periodically reading through the list of irregular verbs on pp. 494-6 of Vorsprung. In the future, if you encounter a new verb and you don't recognize it from this list, you can usually assume it's a weak (regular) verb with -t endings.2c. Modal verbs are not listed here! For these, use konnte, sollte, wollte, musste, durfte, mochte etc.: Ich konnte nicht fahren, du durftest singen, wir wollten tanzen. Use wollte for the past of wollen AND m?chten!3. All the verb forms listed below are third person singular, i.e. the er/sie/es form of the verb.4. Conversational Past forms in italics on this page are strong verbs whose past participle has no vowel change or other irregularity, other than the strong -en ending. These are all in the first five groups below. Note how many of them have stem-changes in the present tense!5. Mixed verbs (-t endings in Conversational Past, but still irregular) are at the end of the list, all in italics.InfinitivePresent TenseConversational pastBasic Meaning-a(u)--?(u)--a(u)-anfangenf?ngt anhat angefangento beginfahrenf?hrtist gefahrento drive fallenf?lltist gefallento falleinladenl?dt einhat eingeladento inviteeinschlafenschl?ft einist eingeschlafento fall asleephaltenh?lthat gehaltento hold; to stoplassenl?ssthat gelassento let; to leave (sth. somewhere); to allowlaufenl?uftist gelaufento run; to go on footschlafenschl?fthat geschlafento sleeptragentr?gthat getragento carry; to wear-e--i(e)--e-ausgebengibt aushat ausgegebento spend (money)essenissthat gegessento eatfernsehensieht fernhat ferngesehento watch TVgebengibthat gegebento givelesenliesthat gelesento readsehensiehthat gesehento seevergessenvergissthat vergessento forget-ei--ei--ei-hei?enhei?that gehei?ento be named-o--o--o-ankommenkommt anist angekommento arrivebekommenbekommthat bekommento get, to receivekommenkommtist gekommento come-u--u--u-anrufenruft anhat angerufento call on the phone-e--e--a-aufstehensteht aufist aufgestandento get up, to stand upgehengehtist gegangento gostehenstehthat gestandento standverstehenverstehthat verstandento understand-e--i--o-helfenhilfthat geholfento helpnehmennimmthat genommento takesprechensprichthat gesprochento speaksterbenstirbtist gestorbento dietreffentriffthat getroffento meet, to run into; to hit a targetwerdenwirdist gewordento become-ei--ei--ie- / -i-beschreibenbeschreibthat beschriebento describebleibenbleibtist gebliebento stayschreibenschreibthat geschriebento writescheinenscheinthat geschienento shine; to seemsteigensteigtist gestiegento rise (e.g. prices), to climbreitenreitetist gerittento ride horseback-i--i--u-findenfindethat gefundento findsingensingthat gesungento singsinkensinktist gesunkento sinkstinkenstinkthat gestunkento stink [not on test, but fun ]trinkentrinkthat getrunkento drink-i(e)--i(e)--o-beginnenbeginnthat begonnento begineinziehenzieht einist eingezogento move infliegenfliegtist geflogento flygewinnengewinnthat gewonnento win [not in vocab yet, but we know it]schlie?enschlie?that geschlossento close [not in vocab yet, but we know it]schwimmenschwimmtist geschwommento swimverlierenverlierthat verlorento lose-i(e)--i(e)--e-liegenliegthat gelegento lie (i.e. to be lying somewhere)sitzensitzthat gesessento sit-u--u--a-tuntuthat getanto doseinistist gewesento bebringenbringthat gebrachtto bringdenkendenkthat gedachtto thinkverbringenverbringthat verbrachtto spend (time)habenhathat gehabtto havekennenkennthat gekanntto be familiar with, to knowrennenrenntist geranntto run [not in vocab yet, but we know it]wissenwei?*hat gewusstto know (a fact) ................
