April 3, 2020IRS FILING DEADLINE RELIEFAPPLIES TO U.S. EXPATRIATES?With all of the rapid changes in tax return filing and tax payment deadlines, all the typical discussion has been about people and companies within the USA. Those “persons” whose regular filing deadline is typically April 15th have received an automatic extension of time to file up to July 15th, 2020. This extension includes individuals, trusts and C Corporations and others with a 4/15/20 due date.So the wording raises the question: Since expatriates typically have a June 15th initial filing deadline, are they included in this July 15th extension? Resident aliens living outside the USA and US Military outside the US and Puerto Rico also have different initial filing deadlines. What about them? While we have not seen a specific clarification of this point, our opinion is they WILL qualify for the extension. The IRS Notice states, “For Affected Taxpayer, due date for filing federal income tax returns and making federal income tax payments due April 15th, 2020 is automatically postponed to 07/15/2020.” The key phrase is “federal income tax payments.” Expatriates and others are still required to pay any tax due by April 15th regardless of their initial filing deadline.Stay tuned for updates.Sincerely yours,Steven E.
