LGBT Module Case Study #1

Mary, a 33 year-old Native American male to female transgender person, wants to look into services that your department provides. She has not legally changed her name so her documents display her given male name Mark.  She looks to be very nervous, shy and does not look anyone in the eyes. Mary has been diagnosed HIV positive for three years and has just begun a relationship with Robert who is HIV negative.

Case Study: Discussion Questions

• What would be the most appropriate way to start the encounter with Mary?

• How can you establish a sense of trust with Mary?

• What can you do to gain a sense of Mary’s knowledge about HIV, how it is contracted, and how it is treated?

• What social support should Mary be offered? Does her family support her? If not how does this affect her? Where does she get social support?

• How can you find out more information about day-to-day hardships and challenges that Mary may be experiencing?

• Discuss other cultural competence and awareness issues that may impact retention into care and treatment services

LGBT Module Case Study #2

A female staff member in your department is upset that a transgender woman who also works in the department is using the women’s restroom at work. She complains to you as head of the department about being made uncomfortable by “that man in the bathroom.” How do you address this conflict?

Case Study: Discussion Questions

• What are the current, if any, restroom policies at your department?

• What kinds of in-staff trainings are in place to educate staff about LGBT?

• Is it feasible to create gender-neutral restrooms? What would that entail?

• Discuss other cultural competence and awareness issues that may impact transgender individuals who work and/or visit your department.
