Directions for when you miss a reading quiz…

If you have missed a quiz due to an absence and you have not come to me before the next class to take it (or at least discuss it with me), you are to write a 300+ word response/reaction to something from that chapter. There must be some quoted material from the particular chapter in your response, too. And you must lead into the quote smoothly and cite it properly. (I don’t’ want to read something like, “On page 230, blah blah blah…”)

This must be handed in within two classes of the absence. Otherwise, the grade is a zero. Please, do NOT give your reader a summary of the chapter. Here’s an example of a decent response…

After reading Book 10, I realize that Odysseus is far from the perfect hero. The guy makes mistakes! In this chapter he makes at least two (perhaps even more) costly blunders, one that decimates his crew, and one that delays his return home. I could not believe that a seasoned war veteran would enter the Laestrygonian harbor with eleven of his twelve ships, yet “[…] anchor [his] black ship outside,/ well clear of the harbor’s jaws […] (10.104-105) What was he thinking? He had no idea what kind of creatures inhabited that island. The way the harbor was described, “all walled around/by a great unbroken sweep of sky-scraping cliff” (10.96-97), it was like the ships had sailed into the perfect trap. Not good, Odysseus.

The other incident that had me wondering about Odysseus’ leadership skills is the fact that his men, the same men who appear clueless at times, had to remind him, after “a year had run its course” (10.515), that they were on a mission to get home. There is no evidence that Circe had drugged him or cast some memory-erasing spell on the “raider of cities, son of Laetes.” It’s like he just got lazy and enjoyed the pampering by Circe too much to want to move on. Hey, Odysseus! Wake up! You are married, and your wife and son have been waiting for you for at least eleven years. Have a little consideration! It was kind of funny that when his men did snap him out of this trance, it was like he was saying, “Oh, yeah. Come on, men. Let’s get going—we have to get home.” Well, I know nobody is perfect, but we hear so much about Odysseus being this great Greek hero, I just thought he was above these kinds of mistakes.
