Singular or plural (C)
You already know that nouns can be singular or plural e.g. ‘book’ means one book but ‘books’ means more than one book.
You can use articles to help you work out if a noun is singular or plural. If the article is ‘a’ or ‘an’ the noun is always singular.
1. Look at this text and fill in the correct form of the noun. Highlight the word that is the ‘clue’.

A ……………………………….. (waterfall / waterfalls) is a …………………………
( landform / landforms) where water flows over a high ………………… (point
points) in hard rock. (Stream / Streams) become wider and
more shallow just above ………………………. (waterfall / waterfalls)
because the water flows over the rock shelf. There is usually a deep
………………. (pool, pools) just below the waterfall because the
water hits the bottom and erodes the soft rock.
You can also use the verb to help you work out if a noun is singular or plural.
• The noun is singular when the verb form is third person singular e.g. is, has, erodes.
• The noun is plural when the verb form is third person plural e.g. are, have, erode.
2. Use the verbs in bold to help you work out if the noun is singular or
plural.

……………………………. (Waterfall / Waterfalls) erode the rock below them.
Often there is softer rock below the hard top layer of rock. When the
…………………………. (water / waters) hits this soft layer of rock it wears it
away. This can make a deep pool or a cave, called a rock shelter.
Eventually the harder ……………………. (rock/ rocks) on top has very little rock
below it and falls into the pool at the bottom of the waterfall. The ……………….
……………………………………….. ( rock or boulder / rocks or boulders) that
fall into the pool break into smaller rocks. These ………………….. (rock
/rocks) erode the base of the rock pool making it bigger and deeper.
