Purpose:

The Secondary Foreign Language Program provides students with the opportunity to continue a sequence the chosen foreign language: Spanish Speakers level 4.

Spanish for Heritage Speakers 4 is designed specifically to further develop and enhance the heritage learner’s native proficiency in speaking, reading and writing. Students expand their language dexterity through reading literary selections from Spain and Latin America.

Students will further develop the ability to describe and narrate short stories and novels with acquired thematic vocabulary and in depth literary analysis. Written narratives, compositions and essays as well as group discussions of literary styles and authors’ points of view will further enhance students’ communicative skills.

Students will identify cultural elements found in short stories, novels, fables, myths and legends of Spain and Latin America, and will compare and contrast the unique culture of each Spanish speaking country.

Ultimately, students will develop a sense of pride for their Hispanic heritage and the Spanish language. By the end of the course the students will be prepare to enroll in AP Spanish Language and/ or the following AP Spanish Literature and Culture.

The course is conducted in Spanish only.

Objectives/ The Year at a glance:

The National Standards for Foreign Language Learning and the Common Core will guide this course. This is an annual course.

Textbook:

The course uses primarily the following textbook which is geared to teach advanced level Spanish: Abriendo Pasos: Lectura.

Students have an in class textbook and on line book access via the portal. Students are required to have a three ring binder and loose-leaf paper, 3 dividers, Black or blue pens.

Suggestions to augment program:

Audio and video programs are available on line and at the public library for students to use.

Assessment:

Classroom rules are reviewed at the beginning of the year and policies are in line with the Miami Dade County Public Schools “STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT.” Academic integrity is expected and enforced
