The First Sunday in Lent: Invocabit (“He will call…”)

Ω March 1, 2020 Ω

“Worship the Lord Your God, and serve Him only.” Matthew 4:10

Welcome: The family of Peace welcomes you as we worship the Lord today. We encourage children to worship with us. If you need to leave with your child, there is a quiet room off the entryway of the church. The rest rooms are located in the basement. Visitors, please sign our guest book on the table outside the sanctuary. We’re glad you are here and pray that in our worship the Lord grants you peace.

“He will call on me, and I will rescue him. I will protect him, because he acknowledges my name. If you make the Most High your shelter, evil will not overtake you. One who lives in the shelter of the Most High will stay in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91).

Deliver Us from Evil. Regarding temptation Martin Luther wrote: God surely tempts no one to sin, but we pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us, so that the devil, the world, and our flesh may not deceive us or lead us into false belief, despair, and other great and shameful sins; and although we are tempted by them, we pray that we may overcome and win the victory.”

Our lives have shown that we so often fail to gain the victory over the devil. Indeed, we often succumb to his temptations. But Christ prevailed when we were unable. He not only defeated Satan and sin on the cross, but He overcame all of Satan’s temptations for us during His earthly life.

As Lent ends with Christ’s victory over sin, so it begins with His victory over Satan. Through it all He delivers us from evil.

To that end we pray: Lord our Strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe tempts us with his deceits. Keep us steadfast in Your Word, and when we fall, raise us up again for Christ’s sake. Amen.

Old Testament: Genesis 2:7-9, 15-17; 3:1-7

At the dawn of creation, the Lord gave Adam and Eve complete freedom to eat from any tree in the Garden, except from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Distorting God’s word, Satan tempted them and they fell. So, evil entered our world and shattered the harmony.

The Epistle Lesson: Romans 5:12-19

The Old Testament Lesson today recounts the history of the Fall into sin. Paul explains its horrifying result – death. He contrasts that with Christ’s justifying act that brings life. God’s grace is greater than man’s sin. It is the only thing that can and does deliver us from evil.

The Gospel Lesson: Matthew 4:1-11

At the outset of Jesus’ ministry, the devil assailed Him just like he tempted Adam and Eve at the beginning of time. Although they gave into the devil, allowing him to gain the victory over them, Christ defeated him and overcame his evil intent with the Word of God.

Out of deep love for the truth of God’s Word and precious souls, we follow the practice of Close Communion in our congregation. This has been the practice of Christians for centuries and reflects the Bible’s teaching on unity of faith in the reception of the Supper (1 Cor.10:17). It does not judge a person’s heart but anticipates agreement in that which God says. Since we do not wish to put anyone in the position of declaring such agreement with us before study in the Word is possible, we ask that only those who are communicant members of this or another Wisconsin Synod or ELS congregation come to receive the Sacrament.

Today’s Organist: Judy Bertoldie

Today’s Preacher: Pastor Edwin Lehmann

Point to Ponder: "The temptations which great saints like Paul suffer in this life greatly exceed the agony felt by those who are dying....The most effective remedy for temptations is to draw your thoughts away from them. Speak about some other matters which have no bearing whatsoever on your trouble, or busy yourself with prayer or the simple text of the Gospel."
