EXT: SAN JOSE DOWNTOWN (0930) – BRIGHT SUNNY MORNING

Jessica a foreign correspondent with ‘Daily Globe’ is driving through the morning rush hour.

After crossing few crowded lanes she parks her car in the parking of a high rise tower which houses the office of ‘Daily Globe’, a leading national daily on the 14th floor.

INT: Jessica gets into the elevator, pulls out a hairbrush from her purse and starts combing her hair. The elevator stops at the 14th floor and Jessica is greeted by the security guard on entering the office.

The office is bustling with activity. Employees are busy working on their workstations. Jessica settles down at her desk. Cell phone rings.

DAVID

Have you heard of the new Chinese restaurant in the downtown area?

JESSICA

Let’s just make it simpler on our second anniversary tonight. How about some Pizzas at home?

DAVID

Canceling a restaurant reservation on our anniversary would be like saying no to a lifestyle which I have always aspired for.

JESSICA

Discussing lifestyle issues at a restaurant is not such a bad idea. Pick me up at seven sharp.

DAVID

I will call in case I am getting late.

JESSICA

Don’t make it too late; you don’t want me to doze off on reaching home.

DAVID

It’s a Saturday tomorrow and we are not getting out of the bed before afternoon unless you want to cook lunch at home.

JESSICA

You are one hell of a spendthrift

(Smiles and disconnects the call.)

How about a bottle of Dom Perignon

JESSICA

I want to get drunk tonight

David orders a bottle of champagne to start the evening. Lights become dimmer, wine is served and they both raise toast to their second anniversary.

DAVID

Does the idea of vacationing in Bahamas next weekend excite you?

JESSICA

Isn’t it time we started a family and took a break from this jet setting life style which is only giving us superficial happiness in the form of plastic money and long haul flights?

(David is excited with the idea and kisses Jessica for this lovely thought)

DAVID

I am all geared up to embark on this new journey of parenthood.

I know I shouldn’t be even discussing this with you at this point of time but the Chairman wants you to fly down to Tel Aviv next Wednesday for the coverage of the conference of Israeli and Arab leaders to resolve the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

JESSICA

I knew this was coming. Look I know I don’t have a choice but I need to discuss it with David and call you back on this.

BOSS

I know it’s going to be a tough call but remember you are an expert on this political issue having reported so much about it over the last six months.

(Disconnects the call)

DAVID

What’s up?

JESSICA

It’s very simple, I must fly down to Israel next week for covering an event or I lose my job.

DAVID

Victor needs you more than anything else.

JESSICA

I don’t see any other way out

(Picks up the phone and calls her boss)

BOSS

I know the answer Jessica but a break in your professional career is not what we were expecting at this point of time. You will be missed by everyone in the office.

Jessica picks up the phone again and calls her mother Samantha.

JESSICA

Mom can you come down and stay with us tonight?

SAMANTHA

I was planning next weekend with you guys

JESSICA

Weekend is too far for me to handle this alone. Something happened to Victor today and I am getting Goosebumps even talking to you over the phone about it.

It was scary mom.

SAMANTHA

I won’t force you to narrate things on phone. I will be with you by four in the evening. Just tell David to hang around till then.

JESSICA

I can’t let David leave us alone for a second till you come down.

CUT TO:

INT: BEDROOM

Jessica is putting Victor off to sleep. David is working on the computer.

JESSICA

DAVID

Is everything ok?

JESSICA

It’s not ok mom, we almost Victor twice.

His crying spells are becoming a nightmare and he is turning blue almost fainting with the spell.

(Holds her mom and starts crying profusely)

SAMANTHA

I think I know somebody whose child is suffering from a similar medical condition.

My friend Dorothy’s granddaughter Rebecca has been going through the same hell since last 06 months.

Let me call up her mom Sarah and maybe you two can find a way out of this strange medical phenomenon before it starts wrecking havoc into your lives.

CUT TO:

INT: PEDIATRICIAN JULIA’S CLINIC

Julia is reading a medical journal on Essential Pediatrics when Jessica and David enter her cabin with Victor in David’s arms. Jessica opens Victor’s pram and David gently places him in the pram.

They both take their respective seats in front of the pediatrician.

JULIA

My assistant told me it was an emergency

JESSICA

It’s been really difficult in the past six hours.

JULIA

Victor has experienced a medical phenomenon termed as ‘Breath holding spells’.

“Breath holding spells usually occur between the age of six months and five years. These may either be cyanotic (bluish) or Pallid (pale). Cyanotic spells are precipitated by anger or frustration while pallid spells are associated with fear or minor injury.

The usual story is that the child starts crying after he is hurt, admonished, frustrated or frightened. After a bout of crying most of the air in the lungs is exhaled; vocal cords which were narrowed during crying, close; breath is held in expiration for a few seconds and the child turns blue.

There is rigidity followed by limpness. Thereafter, the child recovers consciousness but becomes less active for a short period. In 20 percent of children, the child suddenly becomes unconscious following an unexpected painful stimulus.

Measures should be taken to avoid precipitating factors. Kindness and understanding attitude towards the infant are helpful. Over anxiety of the parents may lead to overprotective attitude which can be dangerous for the child.

The attack could be aborted by strong physical stimulus like pinch, applied at the onset of the spell.

The spells usually affect the child till 02 years of age after which the occurrence subsides.”

Does this makes any sense to you guys?

JESSICA

02 years is a long time to deal with this crazy stuff

JULIA

You are not alone; there are thousands of couples around the world trying to come to terms with this trauma.

DAVID

So what I gather from this is that Jessica needs to be at home for next two years

JULIA

You guessed it right.

By the way I need to examine Victor once every 15 days.

And whatever you do, don’t shake him too hard when he is undergoing the spell.

CUT TO:

EXT: EVENING – DAVID’S CAR IN THE PARKING

Cloudy with light drizzle.

Jessica places Victor gently in the backseat and fastens seat belts.

She gets into the front seat and David starts driving towards home.

DAVID

I don’t understand a thing this is driving me nuts.

JESSICA

Just pinch his bums once

DAVID

Yeah let me try that

(David pinches Victor’s left bum while Jessica keeps patting on his back.

Few moments later Victor regains consciousness and his body color starts returning to normal.

JESSICA

Okay that’s good he is responding, he is breathing, Oh my God.

DAVID

Let’s just get into the car fast. We are just 05 miles from home.

DAVID

I think it’s a good idea. It will be a pleasant change for you from the routine anyways.

We won’t stay for long.

JESSICA

Yeah I guess it will be refreshing.

But we need to carry a baby sitter.

SAMANTHA

Leave it to me. I will get Barbara along. She has just finished her high school and waiting for results.

DAVID

It’s over honey he is back.

JESSICA

Mom you saw that? I can’t handle this anymore

SAMANTHA

(Caressing Victor)

He is such a darling he will be alright honey.

(Victor hits the computer table in frustration.)

JESSICA

Easy David you might make him cry again

DAVID

I wish I knew what we were getting into

(Moves out of the room)

SAMANTHA

You need to be little more sensitive Jessica.

David is also going through hell with this phenomenon.

Didn’t you see the fear all over his face?

JESSICA

Yeah I need to handle this more professionally.

SAMANTHA

Let me be in your room tonight. We will take turns to be awake and keep an eye on Victor.

He must not cry again.

DAVID

That doesn’t mean she stops being sensitive.

SAMANTHA

It’s been a while since you have hugged me.

(David holds her gently and they both have tears in their eyes.)

DAVID

Are you going to stay back a few days?

SAMANTHA

I need to get back to school tomorrow or else I will loose my job.

But I will be back on Sunday afternoon and then we can all attend Dorothy’s party in the evening.

Till then you need to hold on firmly and be Jessica’s strength.

Guess what call up few children from your neighborhood tomorrow afternoon and let them play with Victor. You guys will feel a lot better and Victor is going to have a great time.

DAVID

Relax Jessica we don’t have an appointment and there is no way we can reach the clinic before six.

JESSICA

Why can’t you be sensitive enough to the situation I simply fail to understand?

This is a matter of life and death and I have every reason to be panicked.

DAVID

Your panicking is making me look like a dumb ass unable to do a thing to control the situation.

BARBARA

Hi I have been asked by Samantha to baby sit Victor for the evening.

JESSICA

Hi Barbara come on in.

Just make yourself comfortable.

Victor is a sensitive child and needs special attention.

You need to make every effort not to make him cry at any given time in the party because that can get really serious. He holds his breath in a crying spell and that can be disastrous.

I hope Samantha briefed you on this.

BARBARA

Yeah she did brief me about the do’s and don’ts.

JESSICA

Well great then. Take good care of him.
