LIGHT AND DARKNESS

(Gen 1:1-5) In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form [waste; a desolation, a worthless thing], and void [empty; a vacuity, an undistinguishable ruin]; and darkness [the archetype of evil] was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters [an anthropomorphic description (2x: for emphasis)]. And God said, Let there be light [the archetype of good]: and there was light [the archetype of born-again]. And God saw the light, that it [light] was good [i.e. symbolically, light is (equals) good]: and God divided [separated] the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day [to be hot (like the sun)], and the darkness he called Night [a twist (away of the light); adversity]. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

1. darkness = Heb: the dark; fig. misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness. [“evil”]

2. light = Heb: illumination or luminary (in every sense, including lightning, happiness, etc.):--bright, clear, + day, light (-ning), morning, sun. [“good”].

3. (1 John 1:5) This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

4. (Isa 45:7) I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. [This Hebrew writing convention of parallelism equates “darkness” with “evil”]

5. Commentary: Associations: God is light is good. Satan is darkness is evil.

THE COVERING CHERUB

(Ezek 28:12-19) Son of man, take up a lamentation [a dirge (as accompanied by beating the breasts or on instruments)] upon the king of Tyrus [rock (i.e. the king of rock; the king of Babylon – confusion: Isa 14)], and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering [garniture (decoration, adornment)], the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle [these jewels cover the earth], and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets [tambourines] and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence [the opposite of peace: Isa 45:7], and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up [to soar, be lofty; fig. to be haughty:--exalted, be haughty, be (make) high (-er), lift up, mount up, be proud, raise up great height, upward] because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffic; therefore will I bring forth a fire [i.e. light] from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

1. covering = Heb: to entwine as a screen; by impl. to fence in, cover over, (fig.) protect:--cover, defend, hedge in, join together, set, shut up.

2. Commentary: Guess what kind of “cover” it is that this particular cherub provides? Would you like to be under his “covering?” Most people are. Satan is another name for this earthly world of “darkness.” Was the garden of Eden “light” or “darkness?”

GOOD (LIGHT) AND EVIL (DARKNESS)

(Gen 2:8,9) And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden [delight]; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil [with “a root of bitterness” Heb 12:14-16].

1. Mary = of Hebrew origin; the name of six Christian females = Heb: rebellious /// bitterness, (fig.) rebellion: bitter, rebel /// to be (make) bitter (or unpleasant); (fig.) to rebel (or resist; to provoke):--bitter, disobedient, disobey, provocation, provoke (-ing), (be) rebel (against, -lious).

2. Commentary: The tree of knowledge of good and evil (AND EVIL) had “a root of bitterness” (syn: rebellion) as applied to Esau (Heb 12:14-16). Bitterness and rebellion are certainly evil. Where did this root of bitterness come from? Both “rebellion” and “bitterness” are prominent in the Hebrew derivation of the name of “Mary” the mother of Jesus. Mary is an antitype (fulfilled type) representative of all mankind. But whom do you suppose these characterizations of “bitterness” and “rebellious” and “disobedient” might have originated with? From what was man formed?

3. (Gen 2:7) And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground [earth - “evil”], and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life [“good”]; and man became a living soul [of “good” and “evil”].

4. good = Heb: good (as an adj.) in the widest sense; used likewise as a noun, both in the masc. and the fem., the sing. and the plur. (good, a good or good thing, a good man or woman; the good, goods or good things, good men or women), also as an adv. (well):--beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, at ease, X fair (word), (be in) favour, fine, glad, good (deed, -lier, liest, -ly, -ness, -s), graciously, joyful, kindly, kindness, liketh (best), loving, merry, X most, pleasant, + pleaseth, pleasure, precious, prosperity, ready, sweet, wealth, welfare, (be) well ([-favoured]).

5. evil = Heb: bad or (as noun) evil (nat. or mor.):--adversity, affliction, bad, calamity, + displease (-ure), distress, evil ([-favouredness], man, thing), + exceedingly, X great, grief (-vous), harm, heavy, hurt (-ful), ill (favoured), + mark, mischief, (-vous), misery, naught (-ty), noisome, + not please, sad (-ly), sore, sorrow, trouble, vex, wicked (-ly, -ness, one), worse (-st) wretchedness, wrong. /// to spoil (lit. by breaking to pieces); fig. to make (or be) good for nothing, i.e. bad (phys., soc. or mor.):--afflict, break (down, in pieces), + displease, (be, bring, do) evil (doer, entreat, man), do harm, (do) hurt, (behave self, deal) ill, X indeed, do mischief, punish, still vex, (do) wicked (doer, -ly), be (deal, do) worse.

Commentary: Good and evil are two aspects of the same fruit. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil has only one fruit. Every fruit tree bears “fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself” (Gen 1:11). The same tree cannot bring forth both pears and apples. The pillar of fire by night (which incidentally never gave the Egyptians light) and the pillar of cloud by day that led the children of Israel out of Egypt was a single pillar with two aspects, that of light (good) and darkness (evil). To the children of Israel (the saved, the blessed) it was a covering illuminating leader and protector, whereas to the children of Egypt (the unsaved, the cursed) it was a covering of gloomy obstructing terror [Exo 13:21,22; 14:19,20]. To the children of Israel (the saved) the pillar (or tree) was a Godly covering of “light” and “good” and “blessing.” To the children of Egypt (the unsaved), the pillar was a Satanic covering of “darkness” and “evil” and “cursing.” When Woman (before her name change to the Eve – indicating a fall) and Adam disobeyed God, God withdrew the covering of “light-good-blessing” and by default they reverted to the covering of “darkness-evil-cursing.”

1. (2 Th 2:6-9) And now ye know what [the Holy Spirit of God] withholdeth [restrains (covers)] that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth [restrains] will let, until he be taken out of the way [i.e. withdrawn]. And then shall that Wicked be revealed [by default: take away the light and there remains only darkness], whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

(Rom 8:14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

1. Commentary: Only those thoughts, words, and deeds that are led by the Spirit of God are truly “good.” All other thoughts, words, and deeds, although they may appear to be “good” to ourselves and the world, and actually do perform the same exact function, are “evil” because the “light-good-blessing” of the Spirit of God has been withdrawn from them. Therefore, by default, these thoughts, words, and deeds are done in “darkness-evil-cursing.” The doers of these latter seemingly good deeds are most commonly referred to as “working their way to Heaven” (i.e. by inference, without God, without the Godly influence and leading of the Holy Spirit).

2. (Isa 64:6) But we are all as an unclean thing [because we are “of the earth, earthy” 1 Cor 15:47], and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities [perversities, evils: faults, sins], like the wind, have taken us away [and only God can save us].

Amen
