Ramadan is a special month of the year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. It is a time for self- reflection, devotion to God, and self-control. Muslims think of it as a preparation for their spiritual lives. During Ramadan Muslims fast (don’t eat/drink/etc.), this is meant to help Muslims learn self-control. Fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing sympathy for the less fortunate, and learning to be thankful and appreciate all of the things that God has given us.

The daily time of fasting for Ramadan starts at sunrise and ends at the setting of the sun. During daylight hours Muslims totally keep away from eating food, drinking (anything), and smoking. The usual practice is to have a pre-fast meal (eating before sunrise) and post-fast meal (eating after sunset). The month Ramadan falls on is not always, but in general there are 13.5 hours of sunlight and followers fast every day for a month.

Day 1, millions gather travel from Mecca to Mina, a small village east of the city. There they spend the day and night in enormous tent cities, praying, reading the Qur’an, and resting for the next day.

Day 2: On the second day of the pilgrimage, followers leave Mina at dawn to travel to the Plain of Arafat. They spend the entire day standing (or sitting) near asking Allah for forgiveness. After sunset followers leave and spend the night praying and collecting small stone pebbles to be used the following day.

Day 3: On the third day followers move before sunrise, this time back to Mina. Here they throw their stone pebbles at pillars that represent the temptations of Satan. After throwing their pebbles, most followers slaughter an animal (often a sheep or goat) and give away the meat to the poor. This day is a major Islamic holiday called Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice.

Document #5: IMAGES

There is no picture of Muhammad (P.B.U.H.), Muslims do not worship any image because pictures are of man and they take great care they only worship God who has no image. The same is believed to apply to Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) From this arises the Muslim belief that images can rise to idolatry –that is to say an image, rather than the God that it represents, can become the object of worship. Muslims also believe that Allah cannot be captured in an image made by human hand, such is his beauty and greatness.

chapter 42, verse 11 of the Koran does say: "[Allah is] the originator of the heavens and the earth... [there is] nothing like a likeness of Him."

5.Why do Muslims choose not to represent God in an image? (give to examples to support your answer)
