|SUMMARY and ELCC |To promote a positive school environment, teachers were rewarded with a small token of appreciation from the |

|Element Addressed |administration. Teachers were given pencils with their names on them and a small bear to remind each teacher|

| |that they are doing a wonderful job inside and outside the classroom. |

|REFLECTION |I was in charge of deciding what was an appropriate gift with the budget of five hundred dollars. I had to |

| |make decisions as to who was going to get the gift, was it going to be just teachers, paraprofessionals, |

|Artifact #2 |substitutes, and other important staff that makes Belmont a great learning environment. One the gifts were |

| |delivered, I then had to package them together and make sure every teacher received their token of |

| |appreciation. |

|April 14, 2008 |Staff Survey and Data Collection |Dr. LaMartina/Belmont Elementary |6/2.1 |P |3 hrs |

| | |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |A survey was administered to the staff that reflected the effectiveness of the instructional programs and |

|Element Addressed |student learning throughout the building. Each grade level team was to reflect on current practices and on |

| |possible strategies that team level would like to use. The data was collected and assessed. All grade level|

| |teams were satisfied with small class sizes. Grade level teams were also happy with the instructional |

| |programs such as Open Court that was being used to implement instruction. |

|REFLECTION |Overall, most teachers were happy with the instructional programs taking place at Belmont. A major concern |

| |that showed up on the survey was behavior management. Other concerns on the survey were needed supplies. |

| |These concerns were addressed immediately if the supplies could be furnished. |

| | |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |During the School Improvement Team meeting the results of the survey were conveyed to the team. The team was|

|Element Addressed |not surprised with the instructional data that was expressed. A concern for the team was the information |

| |regarding discipline and the procedures that were put into place. |

|REFLECTION |During the meeting the staff brainstormed ideas that would create a more positive school environment. The |

| |staff came up with after school detention and a behavior management center. More information is going to be |

| |reviewed before a decision is made. |

|November 14, 2008 |BCR Reading Meeting: Best Practices|Dr. LaMartina/Belmont Elementary |7/2.2 |P |1 hr |

| | |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |A reading meeting was held to review best practices for teaching a BCR. This professional development |

|Element Addressed |focused on the five step writing process of the brief constructed response. The purpose of this professional|

| |development was for teachers to review the five step process and how to reach success for all students |

| |writing a BCR. |

|REFLECTION |I worked with the Reconstruction Specialist to provide a reading meeting to the third grade team about BCR |

| |Best Practices. During the meeting, BCR’s were reviewed and ideas were given about how to improve each |

| |student’s response. |

| |Increase Student Achievement |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |BCPSS held an informational meeting for IST’s and principals on how to prepare for MSA. During this meeting |

|Element Addressed |it talked about the expectations for the assessment, how the assessment will be graded and how to prepare our|

| |students for the assessment. IST’s and Principals worked together in scoring different aspects of the test |

| |so that expectations can be brought back to the teachers. |

|REFLECTION |This was such an informational meeting to attend. I learned so much about how IST’s and Principals are to |

| |prepare teachers for the MSA assessment. The job of the Principal and IST’s is to prepare the teachers for |

| |the test, so that the teachers can prepare the students for the test. My job was to take this information |

| |back to the staff to prepare them for the MSA. |

| |Increase Student Engagement |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |Belmont Elementary Staff held a professional development within the building to educate teachers on how to |

|Element Addressed |engage students using different techniques such as cooperative learning, technology and extended resources. |

|REFLECTION |This was a great PD that allowed staff members to show off their talents to others. Teachers were divided |

| |into teams and visited other coworker’s classrooms where they provided quality professional development that |

| |would help increase student engagement throughout the building. |

|October 8, 2007 |Organization of School Clubs |Dr. LaMartina/Belmont Elementary |7/2.2 |P |4 hrs |

| | |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |During the Achievement Committee meeting it was brought to the team’s attention that students needed |

|Element Addressed |motivation. The team decided to try to incorporate “clubs” during the last hour on Wednesday or Friday of |

| |each week. Letters were sent out to teachers asking them what clubs they would be willing to head. Then |

| |letters were sent out to students asking them to pick their three favorite clubs they would want to |

| |participate in. |

|REFLECTION |It is very hard to get the entire staff to buy into a program. The first grade team decided they did not |

| |want to be part of school clubs. I then decided it would just be a 2-5 program. The fifth grade team would |

|Artifact # 3 |be losing their planning period once a week and that team decided they did not want to participate in clubs. |

| |I then gave out student surveys. Seventy percent of the student surveys were returned, with the other thirty|

| |percent never returned. This type of program needs to start at the beginning of the school year and the |

| |Principal needs to address the importance of this program to the entire staff. |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |During the Achievement Committee meeting it was brought to the team’s attention that students needed |

|Element Addressed |motivation. The team decided to try to incorporate “contests” into the school calendar. The team decided to|

| |start with an Oral Reading Contest. This would motivate students to become fluent readers. |

|REFLECTION |This was a great contest that took place in the school. Students wanted to have the highest fluency rate so |

| |that they would be the best in the classroom and then the school. Prizes were awarded to the student in each|

| |grade that read fluently. |

| | |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |During the Achievement Committee meeting it was brought to the team’s attention that students needed |

|Element Addressed |motivation. The team decided to try to incorporate “contests” into the school calendar. The team decided to|

| |continue with a Creative Writing Contest. Any student was able to write creatively about Their Wish for the |

| |New Year or If I Was a Snowflake. |

|REFLECTION |In the classroom, teachers do not have much time to allow students to use their creative minds to write. |

| |This gave students an opportunity to write creatively about a specific topic. Many students participated in |

| |this contest and this gave them motivation to continue writing. |

| |Technology Strategies |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |To advocate student learning and staff professional development a training session was given to teachers on |

|Element Addressed |how to use technology appropriate to keep students engaged in any lesson. Teachers were given a |

| |demonstration on what types of technology are available throughout the school building. Teachers were then |

| |required to take complete a scavenger hunt for different websites they would be able to use in creating |

| |effective lessons. |

|REFLECTION |After the PD, many teachers were appreciative about the information given. Teachers even asked for more help|

|Artifact #4 |after school so that they became proficient at incorporating technology into their lesson plans. |

| | |School | | | |

|SUMMARY and ELCC |The Observation process was completed with a first year inclusion teacher in the BCPSS. This teacher was a |

|Element Addressed |resources teacher in the past but did not have the classroom setting or curriculum standards that BCPSS had. |

| |The instruction that was given was more in a lecture style and this teacher needed to work more on engaging |

| |each student into the instructional program. |

|REFLECTION |This was very insightful. Observing a teacher gave me the opportunity to watch to see how well the students |

| |are engaged in the lesson. If the students are not engaged in the lesson, then the lesson is not being |

| |taught correctly. |
