1. Job Purpose

The Council's Economy Strategy includes a range of actions seeking stronger relationships, a better understanding and links to the employment and skills opportunities created by local businesses. This role will make a significant contribution to helping develop the links necessary to increase access to opportunities for local residents, to strengthen connections between business and local organisations and to ensure that the Council works with businesses towards the ambition that Kensington and Chelsea is a place where businesses thrive and prosper.

This role will develop and lead on business engagement activity, building and sustaining relationships with businesses to develop opportunities and support the delivery of the priorities contained in the Council's Economy Strategy.

2. Description of duties

1. Understand and develop the knowledge of the businesses in the borough, including the demographics, significant employers, and sector understanding.

Over time to gain strong insight and important information to inform and benefit the ambitions to develop the links necessary to support the ambitions to link local residents up with opportunities.

2. Work with colleagues to develop a business engagement plan and activity appropriate by size, sector, location. Take the lead in delivering the plan that is likely to include individual visits and meetings, events and attendance at business networking forums and meetings.

3. To ensure that engagement includes Small and Medium Sized businesses to ensure their needs are listened to and understood and to engage these businesses in relevant support to assist growth and retention.

4. Using a targeted approach, build relationships and identify opportunities to link the employment, skills, local Corporate and Social Responsibility activities of businesses with relevant local services and partners. The role is expected to identify recruitment opportunities and to connect these with the local employment support partners working with residents.

5. Seek a variety of opportunities through engagement including but not limited to:

? Link their recruitment and vacancies to local employment support ? Apprenticeships or traineeships ? Work placements ? Opportunities to link with schools' careers activity

Explore and develop mutually beneficial activity between the Council, its partners and local businesses. To work with the highest integrity and professionalism in the delivery of this work.

6. Link with officers in the Council that work with or have significant contact with businesses e.g. officers working with business networks, street markets, Environmental Health and look for opportunities for collaboration and coordination.

7. With colleagues and partners develop events and information exchanges to:

? Build relationships ? Enable business voice to be heard and to inform future plans and

strategies ? Identify opportunities to lobby jointly for change from regional/national

Govt. ? Support local initiatives such as local procurement ? Identify support needs of local businesses

8. Work with colleagues to support business forums where there is an opportunity to encourage joint ad partnership activity. To link with new forums as they develop and grow (Earl's Court, North Kensington).

9. Play an important role in the creation of a Kensington Employers Forum bringing together a number of employers that are committed to exploring and working consistently on local employment initiatives.

10. Promoting good employment practices in the business community for example the promotion and introduction of London Living Wage.

11. Encourage business to business mentoring and links between wellestablished businesses and smaller local businesses.

12. Develop an account management approach to maintain and build relationships and with particular regard to major businesses in the borough.

13. Work with landowners as a route to engage with, and build supportive links with the business community.

14. To work on appropriate communications materials, methods and campaigns in support of the ambitions for this work. Collaborate with colleagues on the wider communications and business information activity. Ensuring that information is accessible and up to date. For example, on the Council's website.

15. Work with incoming or expanding businesses to supporting inward investment and be the main contact for the Mayor of London's agency for the promotion of inward investment.

16. To play a lead role on consultation with businesses in the borough and encourage business engagement with the Council on issues of common interest. Remain in contact and aware of business lobbying organisations such as the Federation of Small Businesses, London Chamber and Kensington and Chelsea Chamber of Commerce.

17. To ensure that all projects, agreements and funded activity complies fully with the Council's constitution, decision-making processes and governance.

A strong understanding of private sector businesses of various sizes and knowledge about the issues faced by them in the current economy.

A good awareness of the range and nature of employment opportunities and pathways into work including but not limited to: recruitment, apprenticeships, volunteering, work experience and traineeships.

Experience of identifying and developing contacts and leads, working professionally and in a consultative fashion to identify opportunities

Well used to and comfortable delivering presentations and speaking in public.

Able to work collaboratively and balance the need for individual projects with the wider priorities of the team and the council.

Experience of developing and delivering business-focused events including networking events, workshops and seminars

Ability to utilise and interpret data and intelligence to develop strategies and plans towards delivering the desired outcomes.

Good ICT skills in operating within the Microsoft Office suite of software.

Well-organised and effective in balancing priorities and allocating time.

Empathy and commitment to support our residents and increase access to a range of opportunities.

Desirable:

Knowledge of the business community within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Experience of working within or in partnership with a local authority.

Experience in working with business research and data

Experience of projects that seek to support more vulnerable candidates
