World War II Casualty Lists

The Departments of War and the Navy created lists of casualties during World War II. The National Archives scanned those lists and they are available on NARA's website in the online catalog at research/search/.

War Casualties for Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Personnel

The Bureau of Naval Personnel of the Department of the Navy created these lists between 1942 and 1947. They document people who served in the Navy from U.S. states, territories (including the District of Columbia), and possessions of the United States, as well as foreign countries. The lists contain the names of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel on active duty whose deaths resulted directly from enemy action or from operational activities against the enemy in war zones from December 7, 1941, to the end of World War II. The lists do not include casualties that occurred as a result of disease, homicide, or suicide.

The lists are first arranged by state, territory, overseas possession, or foreign country. Within each state they are arranged by the following categories:

? Combat dead ? Missing ? Wounded ? Died in prison camps ? Released prisoners of war

The names of the sailors, marines, and coast guard personnel are listed alphabetically in each category.

The lists include the following information:

? The name and rank of the deceased ? The name, address, and relationship of next-of-kin.

The lists do not include the cause of death.

Honor List of Dead and Missing Army and Army Air Forces Personnel

The Strength Accounting Branch, Administrative Services Division, Adjutant General's Office, Department of War created these lists. Each list covers all army personnel who were killed, died, or remained missing between the President's declaration of unilateral emergency on May 27, 1941, and the cut-off date of the report, January 31, 1946. included. A foreword explaining how the list was compiled, a statistical tabulation, and the descriptions of the types of casualties incurred are also included.

The lists contain information about soldiers serving from the United States, its territories, and the District of Columbia. The entries are arranged by name of state, by name of county, and then alphabetically by the name of deceased. They include the following information about the soldier:

? Name and rank ? Army serial number ? Type of casualty
