2. Its means "belonging to it." Example: "A person couldn't see or hear their spirit animal. But they could feel its power." (p. 17)

Directions: Read the mini story below and circle each correct choice of it's or its.

Priya wakes up smiling. (1) It's/Its her birthday today! The calendar seems to smile back at her as (2) it's/its pages flap in the breeze from her open window. The big day is circled in pink marker, and (3) it's/its finally here! She springs out of bed and runs to her brother's room. "Sandeep! Guess what day it is?" she asks him, jumping up and down.

"Ugh, I don't know," Sandeep groans sleepily. He rolls over and pulls the pillow over his head. Priya sighs sadly. He has forgotten. Suddenly, Sandeep rolls back over with a big smile on his face. "Kidding! I know (4) it's/its your birthday!" Priya giggles; of course he remembered!

"What did you get me?" Priya asks eagerly. "May I have it now?" Sandeep leaps up, reaches under his bed, and pulls out a small present. (5) It's/Its wrapping is purple and sparkly. Priya takes a moment to admire the paper and then tears it open. (6) It's/Its a beautiful journal! Priya runs her fingers over the cover.

"Be careful, (7) it's/its pages are made of rice paper," says Sandeep. (8) "It's/Its very delicate. You must use the right type of pen with it." Priya tackles her brother with a hug. Her birthday is already the best day ever!
