[Pages:2]She's in her Father's hand, He safely holds her there, He shelters her with His great love And keeps her in His care. She's in her Father's hand, The place of perfect rest, No harm or foe may enter in And nothing can molest. She's in her Fathers hand, She never needs to fret, He's promised to supply her needs,

He never will forget. She's in her Father's hand, It's where she'd rather be Than any place in all the world, He knows what's best for her. She's in her Father's hand,

He ever holds her there, He shelters her with His great love

And keeps her in His care.

Ms. Janice Anne Guthrie

July 20, 1947 ? August 19, 2017

Janice, or "Bunkie" as family affectionately called her, was the only child born to the late Audrey Guthrie and Clarence Lowrey. She spent the greater part of her preschool years in Goldston, NC with her Grandmother Esther Guthrie Giles and Mr. DeWell Giles surrounded by an extended family of aunts and cousins. She also spent summer vacations in Goldston when the cousins looked forward to her father driving her back for two months of fun and excitement. She taught us everything she had learned during the year in Greensboro, the big city, and all the country cousins lapped it up. She also loved picking blackberries for Aunt Marion to bake into pies.

Janice was educated in the Greensboro City Schools graduating with honors from James B. Dudley High School where she was in the band and other organizations. She furthered her education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (Greensboro) majoring in Accounting; while attending A&T she converted to Catholicism and was very active in the Newman Club. Upon graduation Janice accepted a position in New York City where she shared an apartment for many years with Cousin Imogene Hooker who became a surrogate mother, sister, and friend for her younger cousin. She also spent quality time with Cousin Oddie Marie (Hatcher) Bartlett and family in Queens, NY and with Cousin Ed Guthrie and family in Philadelphia, PA. Janice continued her education at Fordham University (New York) where she received a Masters Degree in Accounting.

Janice was employed as an auditor with several major companies including New York Life Insurance Company, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Westinghouse Corporation, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Throughout her career she resided in New York City, Pittsburgh, PA, Baltimore, MD, and finally in Silver Spring, MD, where she was most recently employed with Kforce Government Solutions, Inc.

Janice Anne Guthrie LOVED:

FAMILY. She was a good daughter to her mother and father; she became the caretaker of her mother when she could no longer care for

herself until she passed. She was very loving and giving even from a small child on up ? she readily shared her time and treasures with all of the aunts, cousins, and other relatives; she shared a life long sibling type bond with Cousins Johnnie Ross Williams and Sandra (Williams) Tysor because they too lived with or in close proximity to Grandma. Her passion was maintaining the family history; once when given a compliment for posting a picture of Grandma's siblings in the monthly newsletter that she compiled and sent to all relatives, she replied that "I get a tremendous `LIFT' from our ancestry." Even the younger cousins considered her "our family archivist." One in particular remarked, "If nothing else, Cousin Janice reminded all of us to love and treasure family. I guess because hers was limited she didn't take family for granted. She was truly one of a kind and we were blessed to have her in our lives for the time we did."

FRIENDS. Janice learned the words to a Girl Scout song while a young girl:

Make new friends but keep the oldOne is silver and the other's gold. She made this song a part of her life. She maintained ties with friends from childhood, from her college days, from colleagues at work, to people that she met throughout her life. She carried an address book with her as she traveled for work throughout the country so that she could reconnect with friends and acquaintances. She remained active in the NC A&T Alumni Association and the Dudley High School Reunions for which she was the class historian.

ENJOYING LIFE. As a child Janice explored the world through books and encyclopedias with a desire to absorb

knowledge; as an adult Janice experienced the world through the arts, music, literature and travel. She loved attending plays on and off Broadway. Her love of music was legendary, and she was able to converse on many subjects because she read books all the time, of all genres. Her love of travel was realized through employment as well as personal excursions throughout the world. Finally, Janice loved to cook and collect recipes; she always wanted to try new recipes however that resulted in varying degrees of success.

GOD. Everyone loved Janice...her life has said it all! She loved worshipping at Mt. Herman AME Zion Church (Goldston), the

Guthrie family church, and was making plans to attend the Annual Homecoming Service on the 4th Sunday in August. Janice admonished us to pray when she sent notice of a loved ones illness or death. She always joined a church in each of the cities where she resided. She was a faithful member of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Silver Spring, MD.

Janice has answered the call of our Heavenly Father from labor to rest. She was preceded in death by parents, Audrey Guthrie and Clarence Lowrey.

Left with wonderful memories of her life are an aunt, Marion Delivera Guthrie Williams of Sanford, NC; sixteen first cousins: Sandra Kaye Tysor (Charlie) of Goldston, NC, a sister~cousin; Geraldine Seymore, Esther Street, Wayne Hooker (Mamie), Tyrone Hooker, Donald Hooker (Pam)all of Sanford, NC; Imogene Hooker of New York, NY; Winford Hooker (Karen) of Silver Spring, MD; Ronald Hooker (Jackie) of Monroe, NC; Sonya Dickens (Curtis) of Greensboro, NC; Oddie Marie Bartlett of Charlotte, NC; Robert Hatcher (Barbara) of Siler City, NC; Walter Hatcher (Elsie) of Pittsboro, NC; Zenobia Hatcher-Wilson (George) of Durham, NC; Wanda Hatcher of Greensboro, NC; Betty Lipford (Earl) of High Point, NC; two special cousins: Delois Guthrie of Philadelphia, PA and Hildred Williams of Goldston, NC, and a host of cousins and other extended relatives and friends too numerous to count.
