BOARD OF EDUCATION

March 26, 2019

The Braxton County Board of Education met in regular session at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday,

March 26, 2019 at the Braxton County Schools Board office.

The following members were present:

Jill Cooper - President

Dave Hoover – Vice President

Brad Shingler

DeAnna Whipkey - Absent

Dolores Wright

Marilyn Hosey - Student

Jill Cooper called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

Jill Cooper led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Dave Hoover had the opening prayer.

The Wrestling Team was recognized for a successful season. Coaches Beane, Jarvis, Williams,

and Jordan Williams and Levi Helmick were present.

The Braxton County Employees of the Year were honored. John Kimble, Band Director at

BCHS and Cindy Robinson, School Secretary at Sutton Elementary were chosen to represent

Braxton County.

Young Writer winners were recognized. CJ Gerwig read her award-winning story.

Johnny Crockett signed in as a delegation regarding boat captains for fishing club. Ernest

Tingler also signed in as a delegation and asked to go into executive session regarding a

personnel matter.

Brad Shingler moved to convene into executive session under 6-9A-4 (a) (2) (B) for the

purpose

of conducting a hearing on a complaint, charge or grievance against an employee and (3) to

decide upon disciplining, suspension or expulsion of any student. Dave Hoover seconded

the motion.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

The Board convened into executive session at 6:19 p.m.

Brad Shingler moved and Dolores Wright seconded to reconvene into regular session.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

The Board reconvened into regular session at 7:26 p.m. with no action taken.

Brad Shingler moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve the expulsion of Student #1819-

18 for 365 days with return at Superintendent discretion.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Brad Shingler moved and Dave Hoover seconded the expulsion of Student #1819-19 for 365

days with return at Superintendent discretion.

Dave Hoover moved and Dolores Wright seconded to approve the consent agenda items

(approval of March 12, 2019 Minutes, payment of bills, budget transfers and

supplements, transportation requests and treasurer’s report.)

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Brad Shingler moved and Dolores Wright seconded to approve the following personnel

Actions:

a) Resignation – Service:

1. Steven Mazzella – Custodian – Little Birch Elementary – Effective Retroactive March 8,

2019

2. Dawn Wilson – Supervisory/Instructional/Transportation Aide/ECCAT – End of 2018-19

School Year

b) Request for TAW Day – Professional:

1. Joseph McMillion – Band Director – BCMS – March 22, 2019

c) Employment/Reassignment – Service:

1. Tabitha Fleming – Substitute Supervisory/Instructional/Transportation/LPN Aide –

Effective March 27, 2019

2. Michall Sears – Custodian – 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Shift – Little Birch Elementary

Effective March 27, 2019

3. Krista Hickman - Custodian – 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Shift – BCHS – Effective

March 27, 2019

d) Employment – Extracurricular:

1. Samuel Brooks Liston – Assistant Baseball Coach – BCHS – Effective March 27, 2019

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Dolores Wright moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve fundraisers for Burnsville

Elementary, Frametown Elementary, Sutton Elementary, BCMS and BCHS.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Brad Shingler moved and Dolores Wright seconded to approve the second reading of Policy

1006 with Shared Table Provision.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Dave Hoover moved and Dolores Wright seconded to approve the private donation of $250

for Anne Golinsky’s class at Little Birch Elementary.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Dolores Wright moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve Head Start Policies and

Procedures.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Brad Shingler moved and Dolores Wright seconded to approve the 2019-20 School Calendar.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Brad Shingler moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve transporting non-enrolled

children on school bus.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

Brad Shingler moved and Dolores Wright seconded to adjourn.

Vote: 4-0. Motion carried.

The meeting adjourned at 7:38 p.m. The next meeting of the Board of Education will

be held on April 5, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. for a work session. The next regular meeting has

been scheduled for 6:00 p.m. April 16, 2019, at the Board office at 98 Carter Braxton Drive,

Sutton.
