A Note from the Principal

We have had a great school year and it is quickly coming to an end. The month of May will be a busy month full of activities. Please take an opportunity to look over the calendar at the back of this newsletter for upcoming events that will be happening here at school. The last day of school for students will be on Wednesday, May 31st. Please note that students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. on both Tuesday, May 30th, and Wednesday, May 31st.

Once school is out, look for opportunities to keep your child engaged in learning. The Harbaugh-Thomas Library in Biglerville has a great selection of books and offers a summer reading program each year. Hopefully, you will encourage your child to read as much as possible this summer. Have a wonderful summer!

From the Office

With warmer weather upon us, we would like to remind you of a few guidelines and policies:

• Transportation - If your child is to take transportation other than his/her normal routine, please send a note or call us indicating such. Please do not call any later than noon. We will NOT release your child to anyone not on the emergency form without written or verbal permission from you. Students must be signed out at the office if leaving before the end of the day. Also, all bus changes must be approved from the Transportation Department first.

• Please keep the district dress code in mind when sending your child to school. Specifically, tank tops or any garment, which overly exposes the upper torso, are prohibited. Also, shorts should exceed the length of the hand hanging naturally at one’s side. NO FLIP FLOPS due to safety concerns!

• All lost and found items will be on the stage the last week of school to give students an opportunity to claim their belongings. We have glasses and jewelry that will be in the office.

• EARLY DISMISSAL POLICIES - Doctor and dentist appointments are legal excused absences. If your child has an appointment, we ask that you bring back a note from the doctor or dentist upon your child’s return. Picking children up for sports games or practices, as well as other after school activities before 3:25 is considered illegal. Time missed from school before 3:25 will be counted as illegal.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS

The last coin has been counted, and the results are in! Because we worked together, our Pennies for Patients campaign was a big success. We raised $3,535.60 toward helping the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society meet its goal of eliminating blood cancers forever. Thank you so much for helping and encouraging your child to participate in Pennies for Patients. The class raising the most money this year is Miss Rebert’s third grade class, with a grand total of $707.66!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR 2017

We are now registering Kindergarten students for the 2017-18 school year.  Children who have turned five before September 1, 2017 are eligible for the Kindergarten program. Upper Adams offers full-day Kindergarten.  If you are interested in enrolling your child, please call the office at 677-5200 for registration information.

APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

At Biglerville Elementary, third graders helped plant a pinwheel garden to create awareness of child abuse.  We placed 177 pinwheels to represent each child helped over the past year through the Adams County Children's Advocacy Program.  These services could have included forensic interviews, medical examinations, advocacy, and mental health therapy.  These services are free to children and their families and are paid for through donors, businesses, funding partners & community members.

Volunteer Clearances

If you will be working with students individually or supervising students in separate activities you will be required to have clearances on file in the office. This also includes any parents that want to be chaperones on field trips. A copy of all clearances and a photo ID must be presented in person to the building office personnel. Information packets are available in the school office, explaining which clearances are required and how to obtain those clearances, and forms can be found on the Upper Adams District website under “District Forms”.

Family Educational Trip Policy

Because it is so important that students are present at school every day we hope that you will plan trips during the summer or during days when we do not have school. If you are planning an Educational Trip when school is in session you must submit your request 5 school days in advance of your trip. The Principal must also approve the trip. We will no longer accept these requests after the trip has already occurred.
